Crop fire extinguished near Morrin

Fire crews from Morrin, Munson, Drumheller, Starland County, and Starland Hutterite Colony battled this fire that burned an estimated 60 to 80 acres of farmland Friday, October 11.

No one was injured when area fire crews battled a blaze Friday, October 11, about 3 1/2 miles east of the Morrin intersection. The fire began around 11:30 this morning and was attended by fire crews from Morrin, Munson, Drumheller, Starland County and the Starland Hutterite Colony. Morrin Fire Chief Darcy Davidson appreciated having all the different groups available to help put out the fire, as weather conditions helped the fire spread. "With the winds blowing toward the north, it did carry the fire north, quite a way, to the end of that quarter" said Davidson. The fire ate up anywhere from an estimated 60 to 80 acres of farmland before crews extinguished it shortly after 12:30 p.m. Davidson said the last few days, especially with the wind, a lot of the grassland and crops have dried, and there is definitely a higher risk this time of year. He cited equipment failure as the cause of this fire.
