Suncor to host Hand Hills Wind Power open house

Area residents interested in learning more about Suncor’s Hand Hills Wind Power project will have a chance to do so on August 15.

The company has scheduled an open house to share their plans and receive feedback at the Delia Community Hall.

Suncor is hoping to construct a wind power project that would be producing by 2015. Suncor is planning to install 51 turbines in the Hand Hills region in the County of Starland and Special Area 2 to produce about 80 megawatts, which is similar to the Wintering Hills installation near Dalum. It is working on making application to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUB) for the project.

The company began consultation with residents of the area in May with their first open house. This second open house is to share more details about the project, allow area residents to meet the project team, view the draft layout of the project and collect feedback from residents.

The company will continue its consultation and hopes to have its municipal and zone permits in place by the end of the year. It is also aiming for the fourth quarter of 2012 to submit its application to the AUB.

The transmission line required to connect the project is expected to be completed in the next year, and site work is slated to commence 2014. This is contingent on the AUB’s decision.

The open house is at the Delia Community Hall from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15.
