Lacrosse nears end of 2012 season

The Badlands Lacrosse Raptors are nearing the end of the 2012 lacrosse season. The kids have shown great enthusiasm for the sport this year and continue to learn the sport and have fun.

The Mini-Tykes, who had earlier this month hosted a festival here in Drumheller, and the Tykes, both play non-competitively, but have been having a blast so far this season, according to Manager Janice Greene.

The Tykes had two games against Didsbury on Saturday and the Mini-Tykes on Sunday.

“The Tykes division does not keep score, but both games were full of energy with some great saves and shooting,” said Greene. “The kids love the sport and are very eager to learn new skills at practices.”

The two novice teams have been working hard this season, though have met with some tough opponents in the novice league.

The Novice B2 team is currently in 10th place, out of 14 teams, with a record of two wins and four losses. The B1 team is currently in 14th place in the league.

The Novice B1 Raptors will have a chance to improve their record this Friday, June 1, at 6 p.m. against the 12th place Didsbury Chargers 2 team and the next day against the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers, who are in fourth place, at 11 a.m.

The Novice Raptors B2 will be in action on Saturday at noon against the eighth place Olds Stingers.

The Pee Wee Raptors will be   hoping to climb up the ladder this weekend. The team is currently in 12th place in their division and will be facing the second place Red Deer Chiefs 2 on Saturday, June 2, at 2:30 p.m. here at the Memorial Arena.

The Bantam Raptors will hit the field on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. at the Memorial Arena against the  sixth place Red Deer Chiefs 2 and the following day at 6 p.m. against the  second place Kneehills Bulldogs.

The Bantam Raptors currently have a 5-3-1 record. Two wins this weekend would launch them even further up the standings.

“The players are learning to work well together as a team. Their games have been keeping us on the edge of our seats,” said Manager Donna Duncalf.

Lastly, the Midget Raptors will be in the Memorial Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Innisfail Phantoms. The following day, they will be back at it against the Red Deer Chiefs 1.

“We may not have the best record, but we have a couple wins under our belt. We have gradually improved every game so far this season. As for the kids they are having a blast,” said coach Brandon Toft.
