Craigmyle hosts MS Walk-a-thon

Today is the day when the men of the valley embrace their feminine side and will attempt the agony that is walking a mile in a bright red pair of high heel shoes.

The Big Country Anti-Violence Association (BCVA) is hosting its second Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. The goal of the walk is to bring residents together to end sexual and gender violence.

Statistics demonstrate that one in three women experience sexual assault in their lifetime. Only eight percent of sexual assaults are reported to police. Of those who don’t report, many say that it was not important enough to report.

The purpose of having the men walk is for them to show their solidarity with women and a statement they don’t want violence in their lives.

The walk raises awareness and supports programs and resources to help those who have experienced violence in their lives. In 2010, the walk raised roughly $19,500 and contributed to developing a website linking victims and the community to resources and services. In addition, the money supported training and prevention efforts.

Residents are encouraged to come out and show their support for the men and ending sexual and gender violence. The walk starts at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Drum FM and will end in the Drumheller Co-op parking lot.
