Delia Owl Club resurrected

The Delia & District Community Congratulates our neighbour, the Town of Hanna on its centennial year. Delia will gain some good insight on how to celebrate its centennial in 2014.  Following is some Delia history trivia. Did Hanna have a place similar to Delia’s Owl Club?

The OWL CLUB was a residence in Delia (across from the water station). The owner was also the proprietor of a soft drink business in 1922. Prohibition years were from 1918-1926 and the Owl Club was a place where gentlemen of the area could obtain a drink along with a card game after hours. There was always a look out for the police and the OWL was raided at least once.

It is unknown how long in the 1920’s the Owl was in business. The term ‘speak easy’ would pertain to the Owl – in these premises being ‘quiet’ was the rule. During prohibition, larger clubs in bigger communities had music and dancing with ‘secret’ rooms in the back for drinks and card games.

The Delia Historical Society has ‘resurrected’ the OWL CLUB, you are welcome to enjoy a legal drink, but likely not a card game; there most certainly is MUSIC! The Southern Stardust Big Band is entertaining in the Delia Community Hall June 9, 2012.  Doors and a cash bar are open at 6:30 p.m., the 17 piece Orchestra will start the 1st set at 7:30 followed by a dessert bar. Prizes awarded for the best period outfits.

See you at the Owl.
