Kaleidoscope Theatre will be saying, “Hello Dolly” with their latest production to be performed from July 9-12 and from July 15-18.
The play has taken actors from all around Alberta, and will be directed by Rebecca Newman.
“Hello Dolly” was first performed on Broadway in 1964 and ended up winning the Tony Award for Best Musical that year, along with nine other Tony Awards. The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits.“‘Hello Dolly’ is such a classic, it’s going be to a huge show,” said director Rebecca Newman.
The musical is based on Thorton Wilder’s 1955 play “The Matchmaker,” and is a play about a ‘meddling’ widow who strives to bring romance to several couples and herself in a big city restaurant.
It was also made into a film in 1969 and was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
Louis Armstrong’s recording of the song, “Hello, Dolly!” in 1964, rose to number one on the pop chart, making Armstrong, at age 63, the oldest person to ever accomplish that feat. In the process, Armstrong dislodged The Beatles from the number one position they had occupied for 14 consecutive weeks with three different songs.
Kaleidoscope Theatre is located across from Walmart on Highway 10 East.
The play will always start at 7:30 p.m. and is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Those who purchase tickets before June 21 will receive a 20 per cent discount. To purchase tickets call (403) 823-7529.
