New course for Dino Half

IMG 5710

September 10 is race day, and the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon is on course, albeit a new course, for a great event.
The event, which includes a 5K family fun walk and run, as well as a 10K run and a full 21K half marathon, takes competitors through a tour of the river valley, and into the badlands. This year it will be even more badlands focused with a new route.
The organizers of the race learned their previous route, which centred at the Badlands Community Facility, would not be usable because of the ongoing flood mitigation work in downtown Drumheller. They pivoted, and now the Midland Community Hall will be the base for the race.
“We had to dramatically change the course due to the ongoing construction,” said race organizer Morgan Syvertsen.
“I actually like it better. The 5 and 10k runners actually get to run the pathway to McMullen Island, and 10K runners get to go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum and back. They have never done that before, so they are getting to see a much

different part of the valley, more beautiful, I think.”
The half marathon course will closely mirror the 10K course and complete the loop twice.
He notes it will feel like a much bigger race with more runners on the path at one time.
Syvertsen says the popularity of the event hasn’t waned, even through COVID-19, and already there are more than 400 registered over all of the events. The Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon has become a destination run for many. It attracts both local runners, and from around the province. A quick look at the registration shows runners from all over Western Canada, and as far away as Nova Scotia and even Texas.
Registration is open, and that wishing to participate can go to www.dinosaurhalf.com. Race package pick-up is at Midland Hall on September 8 and 9.

54 year-old Ken Duke (left) won his first tournament on the PGA Champions Tour Sunday at Canyon Meadows Golf Course, after 100 tries, and banked $360,000 in the process. Duke birdied the 18th par five, to pull one ahead of second place finishers Thongchai Jaidee, and first and second round leader Tim Petrovic, who shared $384, 000. A few local golf fans watched Sunday’s final round, the course was in great shape and the greens ran a 12 on the stimpmeter.

Community Football adds Atom team

The football field at DVSS is already a busy place, as the Bantam Titans and the Peewee Terrapins are back on the gridiron.
This year they are joined by Atom players.
“This is the first year we have had Atom,” said Brad Iverson who has taken on coaching all three levels.
He explains the Atom level does not have an organized league, so they will just be practicing and will arrange exhibition play with other communities that offer the same level.
“It’s all about starting them on the game and rolling with it,” said Iverson.
The Bantams have been practicing for a couple of weeks and on August 19 they will be in Calgary to play in the Calgary Jamboree. This is against some tough competition.
“This is the second time the Bantams have gone to the Calgary Jamboree. It is a good experience. There is quite the competition, but it gives us a good chance to see where we are at,” said Iverson.
The Bantam’s regular season starts with a rare Sunday game on September 10.
He said the team is looking strong. They had good numbers last spring and a few more additions. This is after a successful jamborees season. He says he has some strong players returning, as well as some coming up from Peewee.
Peewees start their season on September 2.
They, too, have a strong core of returning players, as well as some new bodies.
He said the program can only get stronger, especially with the addition of the Atom program, where players can get some experience before entering peewee.
