The Drumheller Hellraisers were victorious in their first home game.

The Hellraisers hosted the Rockyview Bruise Battalion on Saturday June 25 at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. Team member Kyra Reid was ecstatic to report that the Final score was 273 vs 176.

The team is travelling to Airdrie to rematch The Bruise Battalions on July 6 at 7pm.

Bench Coach Lorraine Enns-Seright said "Our team started in March 2015 so we are a little over a year old, and all of our members started with little experience. Our girls played the best that they have to date on Saturday. They really came together to execute all the plays and drills we have been practicing. They held strong walls to keep the opponents Jammers back and our Jammers pushed hard to collect as many points as possible."

Canadian Badlands Aquatic Club swimmers competing in Summer Games

CBACAlbertaGames

The Canadian Badlands Aquatic Club has exciting news concerning some of their swimmers.

Annika Lassen and Emily Martin tried out for the Alberta Summer Games which are being held in Leduc on July 14-17.

Coach of the swimmers, Shelia Martin, has the highest confidence in the girls.

“In order to be chosen for the Alberta Summer Games, the girls had to be in the top three females of their birth year. I think they will do well.”

Lassen and Martin are excited to be going to the competition together.

“The girls are a month a part in age, but have different birth years, so they will be competing in different categories. They were so excited when they heard they would be going together. It is going to be a great experience for  them,”  says Coach Martin.

Gran Fondo Badlands gaining popularity

GranFondo

The third annual Gran Fondo Badlands event is gearing up to host over 800 cyclists in  the valley.

This year’s Gran Fondo Badlands is set to take off on Saturday, June 25.

This event has gained popularity since its first run two years ago. There has been a burst of bikers making the trip to ride in the beautiful landscape of the valley.

“We have a fellow coming down from Italy. A lot of people travel down from Ontario and British Columbia, as well,” says organizer of the event, Rick Skeith.

The event kicks off at 8:00 am after a breakfast at the Badlands Community Facility. From there, bikers will proceed on a route that winds in and out of the valley.

There will be tents set up to serve refreshments for the bikers along the route. The event is also looking into having a massage therapist on hand to massage the biker’s sore, well used, muscles.

This Gran Fondo race is designed for the average bicycle enthusiast with turn around points at 50km, 75km, 100km, and 140km.

“It does not matter when you decide to turn around. You can turn around when your legs finally overpower your brain and you know you  can’t do it anymore,” says Skeith.

The organizers stress that this event is not a race and is open to anyone looking to take a bike ride through the valley.
