Titans fall to Rebels to end season

The season ended on tough note for the Senior Titans as the Taber Rebels knocked them out of the post season.
The Rebels bested the Titans on offence and defence. It took until the dying minutes of the third quarter when Derrick Carriere scored for Drumheller. It was too little too late as the Rebels went on to a 36-7 win.
For coach Fournier, his assessment of the game was simple, and he gives Taber credit.
"They didn't make mistakes," he said following the game. "They kept coming right at us, they weren't afraid to run it."
"They ran hard and blocked well, they played a simple straightforward game and they didn't make mistakes at it. "
While that ends the season for the senior Titans, for some players it ends their time in wearing black and gold. Coach Fournier is seeing four seniors on offence four on defence graduate.
"For the seniors, it was not the end we would have like for them, but for the returning guys we had, they are the one who put us in position to play in this game and have that opportunity. I hope the young players understand that and see the sacrifices they made and are prepared to do the same next year.”
The outlook is bright for the returning young core next season. Fournier recognizes the progress the team has made.
"We improved in many areas and we will be lookout to fill some tough shoes next year, hopefully this young guys can learn."

Titans host Taber in playoffs today

   The Senior Titans are on their way to the postseason following a convincing victory over Highwood High.
    The Titans were in High River Saturday afternoon, November 5 for a play-in round to qualify for the provincial playoffs. The team was firing on offence and defense, and walked off the field with a 49-14 victory.
   “The game started out back and forth, we scored and then they scored. We went into half time up 22-14,” said coach Ken Fournier. “We expected a shoot out at the beginning because it’s two teams that have not seen each other in years.”
   Our offense was firing the whole game, and our defense only gave up a few big plays.” Derek Carriere had four touchdowns in the contest.
   With this win, the Titans qualify for the quarterfinals and will face Taber next Saturday afternoon, November 12, at home.
   Coach Fournier say Taber has had a really strong year and went undefeated up until their league championship. The two teams played once this season, and while Taber had the upper hand, it was a close contest.
   “We played them at the beginning of the year and we were missing a lot of guys in that game,” said Fournier. “So offensively and defensively we will be a different looking team.”
   Fournier believes the Titans can be competitive versus Taber, especially now that the team is healthy.
   “If we come out and play our game, a disciplined game, and execute offensively and defensively and on special teams we will be in position to win that game,” said Fournier.
   Game time is 1 p.m.

Former Titans vie for national junior football

   The Westshore Rebels of Langford British Columbia are on their way to the National Junior Football Championship, and two former Drumheller Titans bolster their roster.
   Aiden Enns and Eric Seiller joined the Rebels for their first season of Junior Football and they find themselves in the winner’s circle. The team plays in the Junior British Columbia Football Conference. On Saturday, October 29, the team squared off versus the Okanagan Sun in the league championship.
   The Rebels ran up a 32-point lead. A late rally by the Suns put 21-points on the board but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels won the Cullen Cup 32-21.
   While Seiller did not dress for the final, Enns saw quite a bit of action.
   “I am all over the place on special teams so I played the whole game,” said Enns.
   This win put them into the Canadian Bowl, the national championship, and the road doesn’t get any easier. On October 30, the Saskatoon Hilltops defeated the Calgary Colts 43-31 for a berth into the final. The Hilltops are no strangers to the championship, winning the last two.
   “We’ve watched as much film as we can on them from previous games, but we don’t know too much,” said Enns.
   It has been a great year for the team, and the two new players, who, in their first season were part of a Cinderella story team that reinvented itself.
   “I am most proud of the fact that we were able to turn a 2-8 team into a national championship contender. That is the biggest thing,” said Enns. “Last season the only won two games, but then this season we kind of took the league by storm, and no one really expected us to do that.”
   The Championship is this Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m., Pacific Time, hosted by the Rebels.
