Canalta Novice Raptors end regular season with victory

The Canalta Novice Raptors ended the regular season Saturday morning on a high note, topping Brooks.
   The Raptors have been playing strong all season, and Saturday they hosted Brooks. Scoring wasn’t a problem for the young team as they cruised to an 11-3 victory.
   Nathan Grenville had an impressive six goals and one assist and Brennen Norman had two goals and three assists, Zachary Jarrett had a goal and an assist, and Rhett Straub and Eric Schrock each had a goal.
   “It was a great way to end the regular season,” said coach Ryan Jarrett.
   With this victory, the Raptors finished the regular season in fourth place and will be facing Claresholm in the first round of playoffs.
   “We have home ice advantage in our series against Claresholm,” said coach Jarrett. “We split with them in the regular season. Our boys will have to be on their game for sure to get a win.”
   He says the team is playing well as it heads into the postseason.
   “The effort level is there, the compete level is there, which is really good when you have kids this age,” said Jarrett.
   “Our main focus for this year was that we set a goal to make the playoffs, as a young team. We accomplished that, so now let’s see how we do.”

The Raptors play Game 1 versus Claresholm this Saturday at 11:15 a.m.

Dynos boys junior B compete at DVSS tournament

The boys Junior B Dynos Basketball team played during the tournament held at DVSS over the weekend of February 10 and 11.

Brady Bosch and Julian Doucette of the Junior Dynos battled it out with the Hugh Sutherland Kodiaks during their second game in the tournament. The Dynos played three games during the tournament, losing the first and second games.

Head coach Michael Lee-Chong said, “The tournament went well. We did not perform to well in our first game against Chestermere. However we played well in our second game against Westmount, who was by far the best team in the tournament. We held them tied at halftime which was a good accomplishment but ended up losing it in the second half. We defeated Hugh Sutherland in our last game in a nail biter that ended up 46-45.”

DVSS junior basketball season winding down

The DVSS girl’s Junior A team won two out of three games played last weekend in tournament play.
   Head coach, Jeff Messom said, “Over the weekend the Junior A Girls went 2 and 1. The girls won their first game 36-35 over Duchess, after trailing by 11 points to start the fourth quarter, to score 21 points in the fourth and to take a 1 point victory.”
   In the second game, the Dynos fell to Westmount 41-36. There was some poor free throw shooting in the 4th quarter, only going 2 of 12 from the line.
   After their loss to Westmount, Gabby Thomson, from the Junior Dynos told The Mail, “We gave a good effort but we had a lack of focus.”
Brooklyn Lotz, also from the junior Dynos said, “It was a hard fight but we tried our best but in the end, sadly it just wasn’t enough.
   According to Messom, “In the last game the Dynos took on a league rival, Three Hills, who they beat on Thursday by 2 points in Three Hills. This was another close game going into the 4th quarter, but the girls picked up their defensive play and beat Three Hills 31-23.”
   The tournament took place shortly after the girls Junior A team travelled to Three Hills on Thursday, February 9.
   Messom said, “The Junior A girls started off strong and finished the opening quarter with a 14 -2 lead. In the second quarter the girls struggled to score, allowing Three Hills to close the gap. In the second half the girls continued to have moments of strong play mixed with moments of sloppy play. In the end, the girls managed to win a nail biter 33-31.”
   The girls Junior A team next see action at home on Thursday, February 23 versus PCA, at 4:15. Friday, February 24, the girls Dynos play in a mini tournament against two strong opponents in JC Charyk and Crowther Memorial before taking a break for a week.
