Yavis Atom Raptors win provincial banner

   After an undefeated week in Spirit River, the Yavis Atom Raptors boarded a bus home as provincial champions.
    Last weekend the Raptors captured their league banner, and then headed north for the ATB Alberta Atom C Provincial Tournament. They took it all the way to the championship, and they did it in style.
   “They played excellent from the first game to the last game,” said coach Bryan Olsen.
   The Raptors opened the tournament versus the host team on Thursday, March 15, and beat Spirit River 12-3. On Friday, they took to the ice versus Ponoka and won 8-4. On Saturday, their winning ways continued as they bested Wabasca 12-7.
   On Sunday, the Raptors were in the semifinals versus Westlock and won 5-1. This put them in the final versus New Sarepta.
   New Sarepta scored first, but Tom Scobie answered back three minutes later. Chase Mackey put the Raptors up 2-1 after one period.
   Two minutes into the second period, Mackey added his second. Chase Maunula added a goal at the 12-minute mark putting the Dragons up 4-1. Ryan Schrock found the net midway through the third period as the Raptors went on to a 5-1 win.
   “The other team was always getting the first goal on us and we always fought back and we shut them down after the first goal,” said Coach Olsen. “The kids worked well together. They have been working all year towards this.”
   This wraps up the season for the Raptors, but the future bodes well for the team.
   “Three are moving up to Peewee and the rest are sticking together. So we have a really good group of kids and we’ll have an excellent team next year,” said Olsen.

Dragons survive game four against Bandits

The Drumheller Dragons have lived to fight another day in the second round of the playoff series.
The team rose to the occasion as the Brooks Bandits visited the Dragons den for a second night in a row on Tuesday, March 20.
The Dragons headed into last night’s game trailing 3 – 0 in the second round series. The Bandits won Monday evening with a score of 6 – 1 but that didn’t deter the local hockey team from coming back with a vengeance.
The Dragons outshot the Bandits in the first period 12 – 6, but it was scoreless heading into the second.
Second period brought back to back scoring between the rivals.

The Bandits were on the scoreboard first, but Brett Edwards scored on the power play to tie the game. Two minutes later Tyler Kreklewich put the Dragons up 2 – 1 to end the second.
Dragons fell asleep in the first minute and a half of the third period as the Bandits hit the back of the net tying the game at 2 – 2. At the 14:42 mark, Edwards scored his second goal of the game which ended up being the point that led the Dragons to victory.
With this win, the Dragons will head back to Brooks for Game 5 this Friday, March 23.
Up to this point, the Bandits have been dominating the series and bested the Dragon’s in Game 1, with a score of 6 – 1. Derrick Budz scored the lone goal for the Dragons in the third period assisted by Tyson Scott and Bradley Stonnell.
Game 2 on Saturday, March 17, was more competitive. The Bandits went up two goals early before Jordan Taupert scored with five minutes left in the first period. The Bandits banged in two more in the second before Slater Dykema scored for the Dragons to end the second period down 4 – 2.
Brooks kept pressing in the third period scoring seven minutes in. Just 30 seconds later Troy Dudley found the net, but it was too little too late and the Bandits won 5 – 3.
On Monday night, March 19, the Bandits were in Drumheller for Game 3. The Bandits outshot the Dragons 20 to 16 through the first two periods, and went up 5-0. Markus Boguslavsky scored seven and a half minutes into the third period, but that was all the Dragons could muster. Brooks walked off the ice with a 6 – 1 win.
The Dragons prepare for Game 5 on enemy territory this Friday, March 23. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Yavis Raptors win league banner

The Yavis Atom Raptors finished the league season with a championship banner, and are now headed to provincials.
The Raptors were in the championship series for the Central Alberta Hockey League Atom Tier 3 North East Banner versus Castor.
Game One was in Drumheller on Sunday, March 4. With Castor in penalty trouble, the Raptors cruised to an 8-3 win. Chase Mackey had three goals and three assists, and Ryan Schrock also recorded a hat trick. Paxton and Gavin Olsen each scored a goal.
Game Two was on Saturday, March 10 in Castor. It was a much closer game.
“They went up two goals in the first period,” said coach Bryan Olsen. “We came back and tied with two quick ones at the end of the first. That gave us some momentum.”
This time Mackey had three goals and Tommy Scobie had one in the 4-2 win.
Coach Olsen said the team played well.
“They are hard workers and a competitive bunch who don’t like to lose. They are there to win and have fun,” said Olsen.
The team only had a couple days to prepare as Wednesday, March 14, they are boarding a bus to Spirit River to play in the provincial championships. Olsen said the team did some great fundraising and were able to charter a bus to the tournament. Olsen is grateful for the donations to make this possible.
