Dragons wrap up preseason action

The Dragons have been busy this week in the heart of preseason exhibition play.
On Wednesday, September 7, the Dragons were in Brooks to take on the Bandits. Brooks didn’t waste any time and scored 40 seconds in. Adam Raesler answered back eight minutes later on the powerplay, but Brooks led 2-1 after one.
Brooks added another early in the second, but Hayden Prosofsky added one to bring it closer and Kai Matthew tied it up unassisted. That lasted about 15 seconds before the Bandits scored again, leading 4-3 after two.
The Dragons and Bandits traded goals through the third period with Prosofsky adding his second and Will Christian adding another. Two unanswered goals down the homestretch sealed the Dragons’ fate as the Bandits went on to an 8-5 win. The Dragons outshot Brooks 38-33.
On Friday, September 9 the Dragons were back on home ice to take on the Calgary Canucks. Calgary led after the first period with a lone goal, but Coy Pighin tied it up in the second. In the third period, the Dragons went on a tear with thee goals coming from Jacob Goudreau, Ty Daneault and Caden Heins, as the Dragons went on to a 4-1 win.
The next night the two teams were once again face to face, this time in Calgary. This time Ryan Duguay took the lead for the Dragons after one with a short-handed goal. Calgary tied it up after two. In the third period, Vann Yuhas put the Dragons up 2-1 but Calgary tied it back up to force overtime. Tanner Dawkins scored his second of his exhibition season just 17 seconds into the first overtime for a 3-2 win over Calgary.
On Sunday, September 11, the Dragons were in Olds to play the Grizzlys. Previously the Dragons shut out the Grizzlys in the first game of the exhibition season, and Olds didn’t forget. Raesler took the lead for the Dragons 3:01 into the game, but Olds tied it up. Raesler scored his second as the Dragons went ahead 2-1 after one. Olds caught fire in the second adding three goals, and one more in the third and went on to a 5-2 win.
The Regular Season begins for the Dragons this Friday, September 16, as they head to Canmore. Their home opener is Saturday, September 17 against the Brooks Bandits.

Former Dragon signs with Simon Fraser University

A valued member of the Drumheller Dragons family has moved on to the next stage of his career, playing for Simon Fraser University.
On Tuesday, August 23, the Dragons announced Kiano Robinson has committed to Simon Fraser University.
Robinson was a key figure in the Dragons organization over the last four seasons. He appeared in 154 regular season games and 21 playoff games.
The defenseman has 16 regular-season career goals for the Dragons and 59 assists. He also has 149 PIM
Robinson was an Assistant Captain in his last season and was a key part of the team's leadership on the backend.
Simon Fraser University is located in Burnaby and plays in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL).
Since joining the league in 2006, they have won four titles and are the reigning league champions. The team also regularly plays NCAA Division I competition.

Local athletes compete at 55-plus national games

Ladies 60plus hockey team

Some local athletes had the opportunity to compete at the national level at the Canada 55-plus Games.
The games were held in Kamloops during the week of August 23.
Jim Milman qualified for the biking events. He competed in the recreational 75-plus 10 K race and won silver. He also competed in the 75-plus 30 K road race and took home a second silver. In both instances, he raced against Bob Wahlund of Okotoks, who is also competing for Alberta Zone 2. Milman also competed on a 2.8K hill climb, and won first place, although this was not a medal event.

He enjoyed the games and is already looking forward to qualifying for the next Alberta 55-Plus games which will be hosted in Brooks. A strong result here could qualify him for the 2024 national games in Quebec.
Karen McMillan and Alison Ostergard also competed at the National 55-plus games in Kamloops. The pair were invited to play on the 60-plus Calgary Outlaws hockey team. Both players were eligible as their Zone 2 team got bronze in provincials and only the top two teams advanced to nationals.
The 60+ division had 8 teams divided into two pools. Calgary lost the first game 4-2 to Team Ontario, and then won the second game against the BC Geri Hatricks. Calgary scored with 3.9 seconds in the game to go ahead 3-2. The third game was a 9-0 victory over the NS Boomers.
In the bronze medal match Quebec scored with 1:20 seconds to go in the game. The Quebec team was favoured to win as they were the defending national champs. Ultimately the teams were very competitive with most games ending in close scores. Team Ontario won gold, Edmonton silver, and Quebec bronze. The next 55+ games will be held in Trois Rivieres in 2024.
