Atom Yavis Raptors second in B final at Kneehill tournament
The team started passing and playing good position and definitely took advantage of their scoring chances. The Raptors had two goals on three shots and ended the 1st period down 3-2. The Chiefs eventually wore the Raptors down as they could only muster eight shots on goal. The “Big E” Westman got a workout for his pads as he faced 47 shots in a losing cause 8-2.
The team’s next game was against Calgary’s Glenlake Hawks. There was barely enough room for all of their 20 players to fit on the bench, so the Raptors knew they would need to play a full 60 minutes of hockey to compete.
Sean “The Sniper” Michalevich was moved over to centre and was full of energy as he powered around the ice creating chances and making numerous defensive plays. There was no scoring until the second period when Nathan Waiboer broke in the Hawks goalie and buried it in the corner. It was an action filled next two periods as Drumheller kept the lead and built on it from a beautiful set up from Tanner “The Tank” Boutin as he feathered a pass to the “Snowman” who finished it off. The steady play of Tyler H, Tyler C, Haylea Crone and “Zach Attack” Suntjens helped the squad to a 4-2 win.
The Raptors advanced to the B final on Sunday. Their opponets, the Red Deer Chiefs looked like some had driver’s licences. The Raptors came out flying and scored the first goal and had 2 goals on 4 shots. Great effort from the ‘Twin Towers” of “Jumpin” Jake Petrie and Kevin “Knuckles” Schrock as they were constantly digging pucks out of the corner and making things happen in front of the net.
The team was playing hard and only down 3-2 near the end of the first period. Determined not to be run over as “Wild Bill” McDougald was keeping things clean by clearing traffic in front of his tender. Unfortunately the ref didn’t see it that way. Even with the fresh legs of Bradyn, the Raptors couldn’t hold the Chiefs off the scoreboard.
