Drumheller Miners shine at provincials

The Drumheller Miners U13 AA baseball team had a great season that culminated with a great appearance at provincials.
The team entered the start of the year in the Baseball Alberta AA category which had 48 teams entered province-wide. The teams played all season and then they were tiered based on game results. The Drumheller Miners U 13 AA team finished ranked #2 and thus qualified for Tier 1 status which placed them in the top eight teams who competed in Okotoks on August 4 to 6, 2023.
The teams were divided into two pools of four teams. in Game 1 Drumheller defeated St. Albert Cardinals 11 to 5. Game 2 saw Drumheller defeat Red Deer Northstar Braves 9 to 3. Game 3 Drumheller defeated SWEMBA White Sox Black (Edmonton) 7 to 4.
Drumheller then crossed over to play Okotoks Outlaws where the winner would advance to the gold medal game. Okotoks jumped out to a 4 to O lead. Drumheller played catch-up all game and got to within 1 run but their season ended with a 10 to 8 loss.
Okotoks went on to play Consort Cubs who were ranked #1 and Consort came away the Alberta Champions with a 17 to 10 win. A huge than you goes out to the coaching staff for the many hours spent improving the boys baseball skills!

New course for Dino Half

September 10 is race day, and the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon is on course, albeit a new course, for a great event.
The event, which includes a 5K family fun walk and run, as well as a 10K run and a full 21K half marathon, takes competitors through a tour of the river valley, and into the badlands. This year it will be even more badlands focused with a new route.
The organizers of the race learned their previous route, which centred at the Badlands Community Facility, would not be usable because of the ongoing flood mitigation work in downtown Drumheller. They pivoted, and now the Midland Community Hall will be the base for the race.
“We had to dramatically change the course due to the ongoing construction,” said race organizer Morgan Syvertsen.
“I actually like it better. The 5 and 10k runners actually get to run the pathway to McMullen Island, and 10K runners get to go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum and back. They have never done that before, so they are getting to see a much

different part of the valley, more beautiful, I think.”
The half marathon course will closely mirror the 10K course and complete the loop twice.
He notes it will feel like a much bigger race with more runners on the path at one time.
Syvertsen says the popularity of the event hasn’t waned, even through COVID-19, and already there are more than 400 registered over all of the events. The Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon has become a destination run for many. It attracts both local runners, and from around the province. A quick look at the registration shows runners from all over Western Canada, and as far away as Nova Scotia and even Texas.

First time winner at Shaw

54 year-old Ken Duke (left) won his first tournament on the PGA Champions Tour Sunday at Canyon Meadows Golf Course, after 100 tries, and banked $360,000 in the process. Duke birdied the 18th par five, to pull one ahead of second place finishers Thongchai Jaidee, and first and second round leader Tim Petrovic, who shared $384, 000. A few local golf fans watched Sunday’s final round, the course was in great shape and the greens ran a 12 on the stimpmeter.
