Dragons legends return for first ever alumni game

    Welcome back Dragons!
Players from the Drumheller Dragons ten year history will be returning back to the Valley in December for the first ever Dragons alumni game on December 21.
Roughly forty players, from the Dragons first season to their ninth, will be back on the ice for one more night in the Drumheller arena.
“We have players that are returning from our very first season all the way to last year,” said Kari-Ann Faubion, executive assistant to hockey operations. “We’re very excited for everyone coming. Some we haven’t seen since they left.”
Some of those players include some of our hometown heroes, such as Talon Berlando.
“It’ll be great for everyone to come back. I still keep in touch with a lot of the guys I played with in Drumheller, but some of the guys I haven’t seen in years, so it’ll be nice to catch up,” said Berlando. “You kind of develop a family, because you are with them pretty well all day for most of the year.”
After leaving the Dragons in 2007, Berlando went to the University if Wisconsin on a hockey scholarship and studied business.
“I really liked it, but you really have to balance your time between hockey and school,” said Berlando. “You sacrifice a lot growing up playing competitive hockey. In the end, when it helps get you through school, it can really pay off.”
After graduating he returned to Alberta and now works with Encana. He still finds time to play in social league and senior AA hockey in Provost.
Another returning Drumheller lad is Trent Colberg who is currently attending university in Oregon.
Planning for the game began over the summer, however there had been a desire to host such a game for a few years.
“We’ve been trying for awhile, but, this being our tenth year, everything seems to have come together,” said Faubion.
For the current players, who won’t be playing, the game offers a chance to catch up with old friends and learn from those who came before.
“They’ll definitely have a chance to talk to the alumni players and talk about what happens after Junior A hockey,” said Faubion.
Berlando is looking forward to meeting them and has some advice.
“No matter what happens, set goals and strive to achieve them. There will be bumps along the road, but continue to work at it and success will come,” said Berlando.
Proceeds from the game will be donated to the Jeff Hendricks Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created after Hendricks, a member of the Junior A Drumheller Falcons, passed away as a way to honour him and help future hockey players.
“It goes to a player who they select from the team each year who is going on to post secondary education. The player they choose is community minded, a great leader in the dressing room, on the ice, and in the community,” said Faubion.
The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. Prior to the game, at 5 p.m., there will be an informal social with a chance to catch up with the players.

Bobcats take down Dragons

The Dragons were looking to get back on track with a win over the Lloydminster Bobcats on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Dragons wound up losing 3-2.
The loss is their second in a row after an eight game winning streak was broken last Sunday.
The Dragons kept up the pressure throughout the game, out-shooting the Bobcats 34-18. However, quality scoring opportunities proved to be elusive for the team.
Halfway through the first period Stephen Doane got the first goal of the night on a 2 on 1 situation with Ryan Aasman.
From there, both teams battered each other throughout a scoreless second period. The Bobcats took advantage of some good opportunities and scored three goals.
Ryan Bloom tied things up briefly with a goal for the Dragons with ten minutes left in the game.
The Dragons will be looking to get back in the win column this weekend. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., they host the Drayton Valley Thunder. The following day at 2 p.m., they’ll be back on the ice facing off against the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Both teams are coming off wins this past week.

Dragons eight game winning streak broken

All good things come to an end as they say.
The Drumheller Dragons, after tearing up the competition, had their eight game winning streak come to an end on Sunday at the hands of the Camrose Kodiaks.
The weekend got off to a good start when the Dragons hosted the Whitecourt Wolverines on Saturday for a 3-2 win.
The Wolverines got the upper hand initially, scoring while the Dragons were a man down after Joey Raats was called for interference.
However, the Dragons came back to own the second period. Dakota Zaharichuk, Ryan Aasman, and Stephen Doane scored three goals in the first half of the second.
The Wolverines retaliated with a power play goal after Cavin Leth was called for roughing. The Dragons held on to their one goal lead to win the game.
The Dragons had a short rest, being back on the ice the next afternoon for a rematch against the Kodiaks.
Last Wednesday, the Dragons narrowly beat the Kodiaks in a 3-2 shootout victory.
The Kodiaks took the lead early in the first period. The Dragons were handed a team penalty for too many men on the ice. The Kodiaks were able to take advantage of the situation and took a 1-0 lead. They followed up with their second goal nine minutes into the second.
Hunter Mills, with the assists going to Tanner Kissick and Doane, got the Dragons on the scoreboard halfway through the second. Unfortunately, the Kodiaks replied with their third goal of the night less than a minute later.
Colton Vannucci broke through the Kodiaks defence early in the third period, scoring unassisted and giving the Dragons their second goal of the game.
The Dragons sent a flurry of shots at the Kodiaks net, out-shooting them 16 to 6 in the final period, but they couldn’t get any past the Kodiaks goalie.
The loss breaks the Dragons eight game winning streak, which they began on November 11. The Dragons are currently sitting in fourth place of the AJHL southern division, with a 15-13-1 record and 31 points.
The Dragons will have three games at home this week. On Wednesday, they take on the Lloydminster Bobcats. Over the weekend, they will host the Drayton Valley Thunder on Saturday and the Bonnyville Pontiacs Sunday afternoon.
The puck drops at 7:30 on Wednesday.
