The Drumheller Dragons destroyed the Olds Grizzlys on Saturday, September 13, with an unusually high final score of 9-5.The Dragons broke their losing streak in a spectacular way, after losing 4-3 in overtime against the Canucks in Calgary on Thursday, September 11. The Dragons were down by two goals coming into the third, but the team managed to get two shots into the back of the net before the end of the period. Head coach of the Dragons, Rob Hegberg, told The Mail the team played very hard and it was a very close game.
Trevor Smyth scored the game tieing goal, but the Canucks were given a power play in overtime, and scored the game winning point.
During Saturday’s game against Olds, within the first period the Dragons scored an amazing five goals, and within 30 seconds of the second period they scored their sixth. Rob Hegberg said, “We played very well compared to our last efforts. We built momentum early in the game and it just carried us through the game.”
It took the Grizzlys until the end of the second period to score their first.
1020 fans at the arena were left with sore throats after a massive line brawl in the second period.
The two teams seemed to have it out for each other, with 12 penalties given for fighting alone, many more for roughing, slashing, spearing, and even head butting. “It just goes to show how our team will stick up for each other, and come together as a team,” Hegberg said, also mentioning the team could have spent more time out of the sin bin.
The Dragons were breathing fire, skating away with smiles of astonishment on their faces as they lit up the Grizzlys net.
The Dragons next game is in Brooks against the Bandits, on Tuesday, September 16. Hegberg said the team will try and carry the momentum of the Olds game into this one to score goals.
