Drumheller Raptors finish second in 28th annual Spring Classic

Two third period goals by alternate captain Chase Miller led the Olds Chiefs to an 8-1 win over the Drumheller T2 Raptors to win the Value Drug Mart Spring Classic bantam hockey tournament this past weekend in Calgary.     This marked the 28th anniversary of the tournament held this year from March 31-April 3 in Calgary. The Raptors, who were sponsored in the tournament by Riverside Value Drug Mart, had a great tournament but ran out of gas in the third period of the final game.
In the final, the Raptors were tied with the Chiefs 1-1 after the first period on a goal from Landon Brown with assists from Thomas Ahner and Erik Olson. The Chiefs scored twice in the second period for a 3-1 lead going into the final frame.
However, the Chiefs scored five unanswered goals in the third period and the Raptors had to settle for second place overall in the 24-team tournament.
For the Raptors, the loss in the final was only one of two blemishes in a very successful tournament. They started the four-day tournament with a 4-4 draw versus the McKnight Mustangs (Calgary), and had a split decision between the PSA Trojans (Calgary) and the Rimbey Renegades. They entered the playoffs as the fourth place seed and upset the Wetaskiwin 86er’s 6-5 in overtime to play in the finals.
