Dynos capture league championship
The DVSS senior boys Dynos basketball team captured the league championship over Acme on Wednesday night. The Dynos and the Redmen have had a long season of going head to head. Their history goes back even further as this was a rematch from last season’s final of the Golden Hills League.
This season they split in season play, and last weekend at a tournament in Brooks, Acme pulled out a one-point victory after a last second shot by the Dynos came up inches short. The stage was set at Acme School for the final match of the season between these two teams who have dominated the league all season, and it proved to be a game fitting of the build up.
A slow start by the Dynos saw Acme jump out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter. The Dynos missed some easy baskets and free throws. They managed to work some bugs out and rallied to pull within four going into half time.
Acme didn’t relent, built their lead up to as much as 14 points in the third quarter, but the Dynos gutted it out, and chipped away at the lead. They did it with defence by causing turnovers and getting more aggressive on the defensive boards. By the end of the third quarter, they pulled ahead for the first time in the game and held a three-point lead.
The battle continued into the fourth, but the Dynos defence continued to yield turnovers, and they were able to build up a 12-point lead. The Dynos won the league championship 75-65.
This was the kind of performance they hope for going into the zone tournament this weekend in Brooks. The Dynos have moved from eighth spot to seventh in the provincial rankings, and will take on Holy Cross Collegiate of Strathmore in their first game at zones.
