Sabres aim for three-peat at home tourney

The St. Anthony Sabres senior boys basketball team are looking to three-peat at their home tournament on January 7 and 8.

Last year the Sabres put out a strong defensive effort to beat a tough Vulcan team and win the 2010 Sabres Invitational. This year the competition looks just as strong with teams coming from all over Alberta to play.
While the Sabres have been strong early in the season and have earned a honourable mention at the provincial 1A level, there are more tough teams to beat including Rosemary, Rundle Academy, Ecole De La Rose Sauvage, Forestburg, Erle Rivers, Our Lady of the Snows and Heritage Christian, which earned an early season #10 provincial ranking.
Leading up to Christmas, the Sabres played in its Alumni Game against former St. Anthony’s players. This was a good test for the team as for the first time this season they played a team that matched their height and strength below the basket.
Because of this, the guards and forwards put their noses to the grindstones to put points on the board. T.J Jones knocked in 15 points, and Mitch Barry also had 15 points, including three straight three-pointers. Josh Mohan had a solid line with five points, four assists and four steals in the 61-44 win.
Before the team hits the court for the Sabres Invitational, they will be on the road to play Acme in league play Wednesday, January 5. This could be an important match for the Sabres as there is a good chance they will meet in not only league play but possibly zones.
The Sabres take the court for tournament play at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 7 to play Our Lady of the Snows. If they are victorious, they will play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The final is at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
