Taking a big loss in the league finals last Saturday, Drumheller’s Senior Titans are not done playing this season as they get ready for the conference finals next weekend.
“It started out like any other game, but it quickly turned south for us,” said Jason Rasmussen.
“They showed up with an entirely different defence against us, the difference was the physical power Rundle brought.”
Their defensive line had a way with the Titan’s offense, allowing only a single touchdown through all quarters.
“We had some costly turnovers, and on our final trip to the red zone we got flagged for pass interference,” said Rasmussen. “A few times we were in their end and couldn’t finish our drive.”
The Titans struggled defensively against the large-sized players in Rundle, failing to take them to the ground once finding a break in the line.
“Even though we had some good stops, there were times where we were completely missing the play.”
Even though Rundle was ranked third in their league heading into Saturday’s game, Rasmussen believes the team deserved to be in the top spot.
“They’re a lot stronger than people say.”
Saturday’s game was the Big Sky Conference league finals, but the Titans will be given another chance at provincial playoffs with their southern quarter final game against the Willow Creek Cobras this Saturday in Claresholm.
The Cobras are ranked as the top team in the Titans’ tier.
“The difference between Rundle and Willow Creek is that Rundle knows what we do,” said Rasmussen, referring to the many, many times the two teams have met on the field. Both teams possess extensive scouting reports one each other, along with numerous tapes of game-film.
“Willow Creek will only be spending one week preparing for us,” giving the Titans a better chance of victory, said Rasmussen.
“We’re unorthodox compared to other teams, they won’t be as prepared.”
Should the Titans perform well, they’ll be “granted either a curse or opportunity to play Rundle” for the third time this season, as the teams will vie for a shot of provincials.
