The Senior Drumheller Titans strengthened their grip on the league this weekend, with a dominating 60-13 win over the Highwood Mustangs at home Saturday.
“It was a pretty convincing win for our guys,” said head coach Jason Rasmussen.
The team is currently ranked sixth in their tier, and with only two games left in the regular season they are strengthening their position for securing play-offs.
“We moved the chains pretty consistently all day long, we also had a lot of big plays. It was more of a traditional offensive attack for Drumheller, running the ball a lot to open up the passing game in the second half.”
Saturday’s game allowed the Titans’ second-string line to get some playing time, valuable experience for a team hoping to go far in post-season play.
“It’s nice to have depth, the more experience your back-ups have the better,” Rasmussen said.
The Titans are optimistic, but when you look at the current provincial standings, there are three teams from our leagues in the top six for tier four (Olds, Rundle College, and Drumheller).
“All three of those teams all have a shot at going to provincials, so the next couple of weeks, and certainly the play-offs, will be telling.”
This Saturday, the Titans will be facing Rundle College in what will be a “monumental” game of their season here at home on the Drumheller field. This Saturday will be yet another double-header, with the bantam Titans looking to take down the Innisfail Cyclones at 11:00 a.m.
If Drumheller wins, they’ll hold on to second place, and if Rundle wins the Titans will be dislodged from their place.
“I’ve been looking forward to this game for a while,” said Rasmussen.
He said there is always a lot to work on, but this week’s focus in preparation for Saturday’s game will be to work with the defensive line to make sure the interior run by Rundle will see trouble.
The Titan linebackers will spend a lot of time this week looking at their place, and running their offence, so Drumheller is familiar with any pre-snap motion or formations Rundle will pull.
“They’ll hopefully be able to make some smart reads to stop the play before it gets too far on them.”
The Senior Titans kick-off against Rundle College at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 16.
