Sabres host 1A boys basketball zones this weekend
The top senior boys 1A (high schools with under 100 students) basketball teams from South Central Alberta will be in Drumheller to play off for a place at the provincial finals, and the St. Anthony’s Sabres are ranked in first place going into the tournament.
“The team has worked hard to be in an advantageous position going into the tournament, but we still have to take it one game at a time,” said coach Gavin Makse. “Every team coming feels they have a shot at moving along, so nothing can be taken for granted.”
Teams at the tournament include Our Lady of the Snows, Canmore, Rosemary, Duchess, Holy Cross Collegiate, Cremona, Olds Koinonia and Youngstown
The Sabres have a 16-5 record so far this season and are taking on the DCHS Dynos tonight, Wednesday, March 10 to prepare for the tournament that starts Friday, March 12 morning.
The Sabres first hit the court on Friday, at 11 a.m to take on Our Lady of the Snows, Canmore. If successful, they will play the winner of Rosemary and Duchess on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The bronze medal match is at 5:30 p.m. and the championship is Saturday night at 7:15 p.m.
The winner of the tournament will earn a spot at provincials at St. Jerome’s in Vermilion the following weekend.
