Sabres soccer prepare for home tourney

The St. Anthony’s Sabres girls soccer team had their first victory of the season playing in a new competitive league.
The Sabres were in Strathmore on Thursday, September 24, and came home with a two goal shut out.
The two goals for the Sabres came from Maddie Davies. The first goal came at the 67 minute mark in a scramble in the penalty area. The second came at the 87 minute, and coach Gavin Makse said she worked hard for it.
“She sprinted on a through ball. She sprinted from about the half to 30 yards in, and out ran a girl 10 yards ahead of her,” said coach Makse. “From 15 yards away she buried it in the top right corner, it was a really nice goal.”
The team played with short bench and quick substitutions kept the team’s legs fresh.
“The defense is getting strong, and the offense is getting better,” said Makse. Everyone is improving. For us it is getting back into it. We were getting so much better with the U16 team, and then we had a couple months off. The more time we have together to proactive and play, the better we are going to get. The main thing is once we get our fitness level up we’ll be really good.”
The Sabres are now 1-1 in league and played Tuesday night against a strong Holy Trinity Academy (results not available at press time). Then this weekend they host five other teams at their second annual home tournament.
The Sabres will host Chestermere, Highwood High School, Holy Trinity Academy, Strathmore High School, and Canmore Collegiate.
