On this past weekend, March 11-12, Drumheller’s Mastel Transport Midget Raptors, tier 3, battled to win the Central Alberta Hockey League Championship.
On Friday, March 11, the game was held at the Memorial Arena against the Midget team from Airdrie. The Raptors won the game by a score of 7-3. Matthew McDougald scored a hat trick and his teammates Shane Telford, Tyler Cardamone, Joseph Fabion and Dillan Witt each scored a goal.
On Saturday, March 12, the Raptors went head to head, against Airdrie for game two of the three game series at the Airdrie Twin Arena.
Matthew McDougald, Cody Hodge and Tanner Boutin each had a goal, and the Raptors were up 3-0 in the third period, when Airdrie scored three back to back goals. McDougald got a break away and scored the winning goal 4-3. On Monday, March 13, Mastel Transport Midget Raptors coach Doug Hodge spoke with The Mail, “The last game got pretty tense. The kids all played well, worked hard and they were a good bunch to coach. I have coached six of them, since they were only 4 or 5 years old. The players were a very talented squad. 9 or 10 of them graduate school this year, so it was great for them, to bring home the banner.”
