Sabres closing out season strong

The end of the season is approaching for the St. Anthony’s senior boys Sabres basketball team and they are hitting their stride.
The Sabres began last week on a high with a win over DVSS, and then on Wednesday they stood strong versus Three Hills.
Monday, February 11, the Sabres hosted DVSS. Earlier this season the two teams met in league play, and without St. Anthony’s leading scorer Tanner Borowicz, DVSS cruised to an easy win. This time, the Dynos’ roster has been depleted recently, and the Sabres dominated with their size and played a solid game from beginning to end, winning 54-39.
Coach Dan Patterson is proud of how his team played, and said the game was a confidence booster. While both teams come out swinging for these cross-town games, he says there isn’t really much of a rivalry, considering this was the first time in over a decade the Sabres have been able win at the senior level.
The Sabres’ momentum continued to Wednesday, February 13, where they travelled to Three Hills. Again, the Sabres dominated as Tanner Borowicz left with game with 38 points and 15 rebounds. Nathan Comstock was also in double figures with 15 points and 16 boards, Jakub St. Jean had 10 points.
The Sabres were to play Trochu this coming Monday however, the team has dropped out of the league. They have arranged exhibition games with Airdrie Koinonia and then Youngstown.
The Golden Hills League Championship night is March 4, where the first and second teams play off for the championship. So far, the race for the top spots has not been finalized.
The Sabres’ recent successes have earned the team an honourable mention at the 1A provincial level. Zone championships are on March 8 and 9 in Rosemary.
