A new season for the Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) golf program is already teeing up for competition.
DVSS teams will soon be heading to zones, with the hope of eventually taking a shot at being provincial champions.
The club met earlier this week to get the boys and girls teams together and start preparing.
“We get back, it has to happen, and away we go,” said Golf coach Dan Hird.
A week doesn’t leave much time to practice, so team members spend the summer on the golf course perfecting their game. Once back in school, they meet and form teams.
“We have teams of 4. They take the three best scores from the players on each hole and add them up to get a final score. So a player can have a bad hole, but the team helps support them,” said Hird.
The top two teams from zones then head to provincials. The goal this year is to improve over the last. In previous years the girls team has had some success and the boys are working to get back on the provincial podium after five years.
“We’re working to improve this year,” said Hird. “The girls have been doing good the past couple years. They got bronze medal in the last two years. A couple of the girls even went to provincials.”
The teams hit the links at zones on Thursday, September 13.
