As trailers began to be packed up, and families and racers headed home the DORVA Motocross Track became quiet.
Hosting the Southern Alberta (SOAB) Series 6&7 races from August 4-6, racers and spectators flooded the track to take in the weekend action.
“The weekend was a huge success. Entries were high and injuries were to a minimum,” said Casey Christensen, president of DORVA.
Christensen said on both race days there were over 200 riders each day, and attendance numbers for spectators reached the six to seven hundred mark for the weekend.
Despite the soaring temperatures, the starting gates were full of riders ready to battle it out on the track every race.
“The weather was a little hot, we definitely supported the bottled water industry quite well over the weekend,” said Christensen.
“We received lots of compliments from people saying this was one of the best organized events in southern Alberta, but we couldn’t have done it without all the volunteers and our sponsors.”
Something new to the races this year was the added event of a mud bog. Giving riders and spectators a fun break after a hard day of practice on the Saturday evening, the mud bog was well received by all. So much so, when the quads and side by side’s were finished competing, many of the kids watching hopped into their bathing suits and had a running race right through the mud. Spectators were laughing and cheering them on the whole way.
“It was a hit out of the park is what it was,” said Christensen.
Results for Series 6 Races, on Sunday, August 5 for local riders were: 50cc seven to eight year olds, Tori James fifth place, MX1 Intermediate Overall, Duncan Michie, fourth, 65cc PeeWee, Barett Christensen, first, Spencer James, second, Supermini Overall, Decklin Christensen, fifth, Dustin Fooks, eighth, 85cc seven to eleven year olds, Barett Christensen, third.
Results for the Series 7 Races, on Monday August 6 for local riders were: 85cc seven to eleven year olds, Barett Christensen, second, Spencer James, third, Vet Master, Ben Fooks, second, 65cc PeeWee, Barett Christensen, first, Spencer James, second, Beginner MX3, Greg Tetz, first, 50cc seven to eight year olds, Tori James, fifth, Vet Junior, Cam Nelner, fourth, Ryan Sisson, fifth.
The Christensen brothers, Decklin and Barett also received the Ryno Power award, given by Ryno Power Canada.. The award is only handed out to eight individuals in the province and is based on an athlete’s sportmanship and overall attitude within the sport.
“It was very special they could share it as brothers,” said Christensen, their father.
There were nearly 20 DORVA members riding in the races this past weekend.
“The locals really rocked it out there this weekend. The club is very proud of them,” said Christensen.
