Coming home with a fourth place finish in provincials, the Drumheller Pure Venom U-19 girls softball team are now moving right into league playoffs.
Provincials took place in Leduc, from June 30 to July 2.
“The girls played phenomenally. All the games were fairly close,” said Brent Sands, head coach of the Drumheller Pure Venom.
Playing their first game on Saturday, June 30, the Venom stepped up to the plate. They beat the Peace River Heat, who were the silver medalists in provincials the year prior, 8-2. The second game played on the Saturday, against Camrose Crossfire, unfortunately was lost 8-4.
Sunday there was a rain delay, pushing the Venom’s second game back to 8 a.m. the following morning. Sands said this unexpected early start was a little rough on the players but they managed a win, 10-9, against the Sedgwick Cobras.
This win guaranteed the team a spot in the semi-finals, being one of the top four teams. Battling it out, Pure Venom eventually finished with a fourth place overall.
“Some of the locals from Drumheller came up [to Leduc] just to watch the girls. I was very pleased to see that, it meant so much to have local support,” said Sands.
Pure Venom played July 3, just a day after finishing provincials, in Calgary for league playoffs. They won against the Nosecreek Fusion, 19-7. This advanced them to the silver medal game on July 5. They lost to the SBR Vinck team, 4-3. This ended the season for the Venom with a silver medal in the Calgary Midget League.
