The St. Anthony’s Sabres senior boys basketball season ended with a win as they captured the consolation trophy at zones.
The Sabres were at Olds Koinonia Christian School to compete in the 1A South Central Zone Tournament. The top seven teams from the area competed for the championship, as well as two spots at provincials.
The Sabres began their weekend seeded in third place, but ran into trouble early against Youngstown. The Sabres did not have an answer for Youngstown’s offence, despite beating them in tournament play earlier this season. This sank the Sabres’ chances as they went to the consolation side of the tournament.
This meant rising early to take on Airdrie Koinonia in round robin play.
The Sabres came out with a solid effort but could not shake the Eagles who kept the game close. Foul trouble hampered the Sabres who saw two players foul out. Another starter saw limited time because of this. The Sabres held on to win 60-55. Tanner Borowicz was dominant with 23 points, Emmanuelle Doolittle had 12 and Jordan Comstock came up with 11 points, seven in the final quarter for the win.
The Sabres then faced Our Lady of the Snows from Canmore in round robin play. This time the Sabres came out with renewed vigour and pushed the tempo of the game. This enlivened their transition offence as they made short work of the Canmore School. It was a balanced effort as virtually every player scored.
The Sabres ended their season with a 59-34 win and the consolation trophy. This was the final game for seniors T.J. Jones, Jordan Comstock, Joey Dietrich and Emmanuel Doolittle, and all performed strong.
The Sabres have a strong future, as starter and top scorer Tanner Borowicz will be returning. The rest of the team improved throughout the season and show great potential for the future.
The team will don their uniforms one final time this season at the annual alumni game on March 24.
