Friday night’s come from behind win will certainly turn heads as the Titans march through the season.
The Senior Titans went to Taber to play W.R. Myers last Friday in their first road game of the season. Taber, a consistently strong team was ranked eighth in the province going into the game.
“In the first quarter we were looking a little shaky, I don’t know if it was the road,” said coach Ken Fournier.
While the Titans scored on their first drive taking a 7-0 lead, lack of timing, a couple dropped balls and mental mistakes saw them down 15-14 at the end of the half time. Taber scored right away in the third quarter, widening the gap
“The boys battled back. The boys stuffed them on defence, and on offence they made a few big plays. Everything was working on special teams,” said Fournier. “That fourth quarter was quite convincing.”
Grade 10-er Spencer Fournier ran in thee touchdowns; Ryan Soledad also scored, as did Braden Scriven.
Coach Fournier said the team was able to do this all on the ground, as the wind wasn’t conducive to a passing game.
“With our offence, if we don’t need the passing game, we don’t have to use it. We’ll keep it to the ground and control the clock,” said Fournier.
He adds the score does not show how powerful a running team Taber is.
They run a wishbone offence, so the less time with the ball, the better, because they are just as likely to score as we are,” said Fournier. “Players like Geoff Saltys and Alan Lister stepped up big on defence.”
In the end, the Titans won 37-21.
“The teams in our league will take note of that win. Taber is a strong team and they just came off a win over Kate Andrews, so I don’t think they liked it that much,” said Fournier.
The win moved the Titans up to 6th spot in the provincial rankings, and dropped W.R. Myers from 8th to 9th. There is a chance the two teams will meet in the post season.
The team is back on the field this Saturday to host Coaldale.
