Royals end season with provincial silver

The Drumheller Peewee Royals brought home provincial silver this weekend after losing to Killam 12-4 in the culmination of their season.

The tournament in Lacombe saw the Under-14 girls take on five teams in the round robin and advance to the final round after beating Lacombe 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh (they only play seven innings).
“They were really strong and from the first time we saw them we thought they’d win it. We just had one bad inning and lost the game,” says coach Shari Fournier.
The Royals hit well, just couldn’t get any breaks against the strong defence of Killam. They tied it up at 2-2 but ran out of time after Killam  had a seven run inning in the fifth.
The team only had three second year players, the rest of the team hadn’t competed at the provincial level before.
“They played absolutely phenomenal. That Killam was a step above everyone, so for us to finish with a silver we’re very happy with that,” says Fournier. “We can’t hang our heads about that.”
The Royals competed in division 1 in the Calgary Softball Association this year.
“Most of them didn’t even want us in the league. We went in there and both the peewee and bantam teams did very well this year.”
Despite the extra work on both the parents’ and players’ part to travel to Calgary, Fournier believes the team loved it all year.
“They jelled all year and became very good friends. I think they’ll be back next year,” says Fournier. “We finished third in league, second in provincials. As coaches, we’re very happy with how the year went.”
