Laura Gwendolyn

January 3, 1927 - July 4, 2024

Laura was born in Drumheller to Murray and Lovina Dougherty and raised in Morrin alongside her brother Bernard.
After completing high school in Morrin, Laura went to work in Drumheller for Canadian Utilities. Laura married William (Bill) Waters on January 17, 1951, and they took up residence on the Waters’ farm, at which point she went from “townie” to “farmer’s wife” which meant gas lights, no running water or indoor plumbing! Laura took to farm life, becoming a full-time homemaker and mother. They raised three children, Harvey, Trevor and Merridy while being active members of the Morrin community. During this time, Laura was very involved in the Morrin United Church, directing the youth choir and leading the CGIT. She was also involved in many community groups, such as curling and bridge club, while supporting their children’s sports and music.
In 1971, Laura went to work for Larry Nielsen Agencies (later Nielsen and Siemens) and remained there for many years. After Laura and Bill retired, they enjoyed many years travelling overseas and as snowbirds in Yuma, Arizona where they made many friends and enjoyed “happy hour” - a tradition maintained for the rest of her days.
Bill and Laura left the Morrin farm in 1998, moving to “the little house” on daughter Merridy and Terry Martin ‘s acreage south of Drumheller.
Laura lost the love of her life when Bill passed away in 2006. She continued to reside in her own home enjoying Blue Jays baseball, playing cards, happy hour and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren until her passing.
Left to love and remember her are her brother Bernard (Joanne deceased ‘24), children Marylyn Waters (Harvey deceased ‘22), Trevor and Beverly Waters, and Merridy and Terry Martin, her grandchildren Rhonda (Thomas), James (Cheryl), Chris (Jill), Brendan (Kelly), Kathryn, Nathan (Heather), and Laura (Basil), and great-grandchildren Terry, Gilbert, Rylie, Jude, Connor, Jonah, Basil, Rorie, and Otis.
She is also lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of Laura’s life will be held at the Morrin Community Hall on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 11:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Laura’s memory to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or to the Drumheller and District Health Foundation. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements. 403-823-2666
