Work begins on Michichi Creek bank remediation

It appears that lobbying has paid off as last week crews were working on remediating the washed out banks of the Michichi Creek behind homes on 9th Street North West.
Last April unusually high runoff eroded the banks of Michichi Creek threatening properties in the area. The runoff left a chasm that threatened residential properties.
Since the high water event the Town of Drumheller has been lobbying to have the creek bank fixed. In January of this year The Mail reported that the town was close to having a commitment to have the work done. It took agreement by a number of levels of government as well as departments as the work involved construction on a waterway.
Ledcor agreed to take on the project and last week material was being hauled in to fill the extremely eroded banks caused by runoff. Earlier the project was estimated to take three weeks, depending on weather.
Also last week a crew was working on the bridge that crosses Michichi Creek on North Dinosaur trail. This was regular maintenance not related to the remediation project.

Husky Energy supports Badlands Community Facility

The Badlands Community Facility (BCF) is receiving another substantial donation that is directed to the creation of the new library.
Husky Energy is giving the BCF $25,000 to help pay for the construction of the new building.
“It’s great, we really appreciate all of the support we get from the donors in making an important piece of infrastructure a reality,” said Heather Little, marketing and events officer for the Town of Drumheller.
The money will be used to pay for the capital costs of the new library. The donation will not be going towards programming or new books, for example.
For inquiries about making a donation to the new facility, contact Little at 403-823-1333.

Man sentenced nine months for assault

A man received a nine-month sentence after pleading guilty to assault, uttering treats and mischief.
Stanley Penner appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, February 17. His guilty plea followed just a day after an incident in Drumheller.
The court heard that on Tuesday afternoon Penner was embroiled in an arguement with his brother at a residence in Drumheller, and it escalated to an assault. Penner punched and kicked the victim and broke his glasses. At one point Penner threatened to take a knife from the kitchen and stab his bother. He went to the kitchen, but returned with no knife, however continued the beating.
Penner also pleaded guilty to an unrelated event in August in Lloydminster, where he approached a person claiming the other individual owed him $50 for beer money, and threatened to assault him.
The crown and defense agreed a nine-month global sentence would be appropriate. Penner had previous convictions, the most recent dating back to 2007. Judge Shriar agreed to the joint submission.
