The Mail takes pride in announcing Drumheller’s New Year’s Baby every year and rewarding their family with dozens of prizes, and 2023 will not be an exception.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) will not be announcing New Year’s babies in Alberta due to ongoing challenges at healthcare facilities due to a surge of respiratory illnesses and current capacity challenges.
If you think you may be the family who delivers the New Year’s baby in Drumheller, of if you know who they are, please reach out to news@drumhellermail.com or call 403-823-2580 so we can make arrangements to present the prizes to the lucky family.

Inmate sentenced for assault

Drumheller Institution

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution was sentenced to 75 days for his part in a stabbing at the jail.
Ian Gladue appeared in Provincial Court in Drumheller on Friday, December 9. He pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon.
On December 9, 2021, police attended to a report of a stabbing at the Drumheller Institution. The victim fled four men as they attacked, and prevented him from closing a cell door.
The inmate was stabbed and had hot oil poured on him.
Gladue had a weapon but it was knocked out of his hand.
While the evidence showed he struck no blows, he was an active participant in the attack that ended with the victim in the hospital with a stab wound and burns.
The submission from the Crown and defence came as a joint submission as there were triable issues.
He was sentenced to 75 days, but had satisfied the sentence with 50 actual days with credit for pretrial custody.
