While spring has just sprung, already the valley is seeing a full-fledged feature film using Drumheller as a set.
This week many have seen action in downtown Drumheller as crews work on the Bollywood spy drama Khufiya.
According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the film is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, who is also credited as a writer. It is based on the novel Escape to Nowhere by Amar Bhushan, inspired by true events.
The film features many well-known Bollywood actors, as well as Ali Fazal who appeared along with Judy Dench in Victoria and Abdul, and appeared in Death on the Nile.
The film also features Tabu, whose career has spanned four decades and appeared in Life of Pi.
The film centres around Krishna Mehra, a spy who is assigned to track a mole selling Indian defence secrets.
The film is being shot in various locations including local neighbourhoods as well as downtown.
According to a Netflix press release, Director Bhardwaj said, “With Khufiya, my attempt is to create an edgy espionage film that contrasts the slow burn of intelligence and surveillance work with one’s deep rooted emotional conflicts.”
The production is listed as being in post-production, and there is no release date listed.

Dry spring means heightened fire risk

Early spring conditions, including low relative humidity levels combined with below average precipitation levels has meant an increased risk of grassfires in the region.
A fire advisory was put in place on March 21 which advised all residents to take extreme caution and only complete necessary burning. Controlled burn notifications are being managed on a case-by-case basis, with an emphasis on strong precautions and checking and re-checking old burns.
Over the past few years, wildfires–specifically grassfires–have become more frequent and more destructive in this region. To help residents better protect properties and operations, Special Areas Fire Services are highlighting some easy fire prevention techniques from FireSmart Canada.
“Local fire departments have seen the difference fire prevention makes to reduce impacts of grassfires. FireSmart applies to everyone, especially when living in the Special Areas means large distances and long travel times for fire departments. Implementing FireSmart in your yard, your home, or your farming operation is an important way you can reduce your risks,” said Glen Durand, Special Areas Fire Chief
FireSmart Canada is a national program which helps identify and reduce the risks wildfires pose to communities and structures. Originally designed for the wildland/urban interface, this initiative is now used in all areas of the province.

Along with the seasons changing, Special Areas Fire Services will be seeing other big changes over the coming months. Special Areas Fire Chief Glen Durand is planning to retire from his role in July after serving more than forty years with the Special Areas Board. The process for recruiting a new Fire Chief is expected to take place this spring. During this process, Deputy Chief Rob Palmer will step into the Fire Chief role on an acting basis.
“I have enjoyed my forty years of employment working in the Special Areas and have seen and experienced many changes over these years. From changing faces to evolving processes, it seems as though all things shift and grow over time. I considered myself fortunate to have gained employment with our local municipality, and to have served my community,” said Chief Durand.

The Drumheller Memorial Arena was busy over the weekend of April 8-10 as the Dragons hosted the first of two Spring Prospects Camps. They invited young hockey players with designs of one day playing junior hockey to be evaluated and receive feedback on how to improve their game.
