New bylaw allows Big Valley residents to go paperless

BigValley 2021

Big Valley council approved a bylaw which will allow administration to send documents, such as utility bills, tax notices, and the community newsletter The Whistle by email during the regular Thursday, July 14 council meeting.
Although residents have had the option to receive these documents by email previously, there was no bylaw in place officially giving administration the authority to do so.
“There has been quite a bit of interest in this, and we’ve had a number of (authorization) forms filled out and returned,” Chief Administrative Officer Elaine Macdonald told the Mail.
She added, by being able to send these items electronically, it helps make things easier for administrative staff and also saves the village some costs on postage.
Residents interested in going paperless and receiving their tax notices and, or utility bills by email can request an authorization form from administration by phone at 403-876-2269 or email at info@villageofbigvalley.ca

Man sentenced after flight from RCMP

Copy of court

An Innisfail man was sentenced to two years less a day for a number of charges, including dangerous driving, flight from police and possession of stolen property.
August Baker appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, July 8. His most serious charges stem from an altercation with Three Hills RCMP on September 24, 2020.
According to a police report, at about 3:30 p.m., an off-duty police officer was at the Circle K convenience store in Three Hills. He noted a man in a mask fueling a GMC Sierra. The officer ran the plate and learned the vehicle had been stolen in Rimbey that morning.
Two police vehicles arrived and blocked the truck from exiting, and police attempted to make an arrest. The driver put the truck in reverse and slammed into a police vehicle. Officers attempted to remove the driver but he managed to shift into drive and rammed the second vehicle.
The truck exited the community and headed north on Highway 21 with a blown tire. After about six kilometres, the man exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was arrested. He had outstanding warrants from Drumheller, Red Deer, and Innisfail.
Baker pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, flight from police, possession of bear spray, failing to comply with a weapons order, failing to comply by being in a vehicle without the registered owner, possession of drugs and possession of stolen property.
He also pleaded guilty of previous charges including breaches of his release, possession of drugs, break and enter and possession of stolen property.
Baker was sentenced to two years less a day.
He has served 378 days of pretrial custody, and was deemed credited for 580 days. This leaves 149 days to be served.
