Man sentenced for drug trafficking

Courthouse

A Drumheller man was given a conditional sentence order after pleading guilty to trafficking in cocaine.
Richard Nath appeared in the Alberta Court of Justice in Drumheller on Friday, October 13, to make his plea.
The court heard how in November of 2022, RCMP had received information that Nath may have been trafficking in drugs and began surveillance. Police undertook an undercover operation, and on May 3, 2023, arranged a purchase through texting. They received a small amount of crack from an unknown female.
On May 11, an undercover officer arranged a second purchase. This time, they received 3.5 grams of crack cocaine directly from Nath.
A short time later, RCMP made a traffic stop of a Dodge Caravan and arrested Nath and his spouse Erica Devoe, who were in the vehicle.
Police seized 11.6 grams of crack cocaine, as well as $330 in a purse, including the buy money.
The federal crown alleged a short, dated and unrelated criminal record and did note an aggravating factor was the investigation showed this was not a one-off, but an operation of a commercial scale.
A mitigating factor considered was that it was an early guilty plea.
Defence for Nath noted that Nath was injured in a vehicle crash a couple of years prior and had medical issues stemming from the collision. He has been unemployed since the accident.
The pain from his injuries caused him to relapse, and he began selling drugs as a way to maintain his addiction. All of this happened behind his wife's back, and he has been accepted into a treatment facility.
Nath was sentenced to an 18-month conditional sentence order and is to complete 60 hours of community service.
Charges against Erica Devoe were withdrawn.

On Wednesday, October 11 St. Anthony’s School sent 16 Junior High Cross-Country runners to the South Central Zone Championships on a wet and cool day in Trochu.
The team trained 2-3 times a week and were bussed to run up and down the hills behind the museum in preparation for the challenging Trochu course.
The top performer for St. Anthony’s School was Weston Christianson who finished with a top 10 performance, placing 8th overall with a Midget Girls time of 9:15 in the 2 kilometre race. The top time for the Saints was Riley Visser finishing 19th out of 111 total runners with a Bantam Boys time of 9:01 in the 2 kilometre race.
The St. Anthony’s Jr. High Cross-Country Running team finished in 3rd place overall in the 2J category, accumulating a total of 19 points which was 3 spots better than last year.
Head Coach Gavin Makse was very proud of how the team has grown in both numbers and dedication for training. A number of athletes would run on their own time and were rewarded with personal bests throughout the season. Coach Makse would like to thank Veronique Ram for her assistance in training the team this year.
Preparations are already being made for next season to attend more meets prior to Zones.

The Salvation Army in Drumheller is gearing up for its busiest time of the year and are seeking donations to fill the coffers and shelves of the local food bank, and volunteers to fill kettle shifts ahead of the holiday season.
One way The Salvation Army is hoping to fill its coffers is with the annual Red Bag Food Drive, which will be held on Thursday, November 30.
“We’re going to start our kettle season on November 17. We’re always looking for kettle volunteers,” says Community and Family Services and Anti-Violence coordinator Amanda Courtenay.
The Salvation Army has been busy with donation drives for its food bank, including the annual Stuff the Bus which helped to raise over $3,800 between the barbecue fundraiser and kettle donations, and over 1,000 pounds of food.
Other organizations within the community have also shown their support.
Drumheller RCMP held its own Cram the Cruiser food drive event, and during the month of September the Saint Anthony’s Church also held its own food drive which helped to raise 682 pounds of food, plus cash donations.
Those interested in picking up a two-hour volunteer shift manning the kettles starting November 17 are encouraged to reach out to The Salvation Army at 403-823-2215.
Volunteer drivers are also needed for the Red Bag Food Drive on November 30.
Currently, the food bank is asking those looking to donate food items to consider donating items such as soups, crackers, juice, fruit cups, and canned vegetables and meat.
