Strathmore RCMP arrest two in stolen vehicle with drugs, weapons

Strathmore RCMP General Duty and Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) members responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a field in rural Wheatland County which resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of a quantity of drugs and weapons.
On Friday, February 3 at approximately 9:30 a.m. members responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a field stuck in the snow in the area of Range Road 234 and Township Road 244 in rural Wheatland County, north of Highway 1.
Responding members checked the occupants who were wanted on Canada Wide Parole Warrants and determined the vehicle they were in was stolen. Both were arrested.
Upon a search, methamphetamine was found. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 190 grams of suspected methamphetamine with a potential street value of $19,000; $22,275 in cash; a replica handgun; numerous edged and impact weapons; and government identification which did not belong to either subject.
Both males were transported to the Strathmore Detachment where they were held for bail hearings.
Christopher Lindgren, a 31 year old resident of Bezanson, a hamlet in northern Alberta approximately 35 kilometres east of Grande Prairie, and Nathan Piche, a 30 year old resident of Cold Lake in northern Alberta approximately 190 kilometres north of Lloydminster, were charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking; Possession of Items Used for Trafficking in a Controlled Substance; Possession of a Prohibited Weapon; 14 counts of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose; Obstructing a Peace Officer; and two counts of Unlawful Possession of Government Documents.
Nathan Piche was charged with additional offences of Possession of a Firearm Contrary to a Prohibition Order; Illegal Possession of Government Documents; and five other offences under the Traffic Safety Act relating to no insurance, registration infractions, unlawful use of license plate, and unauthorized operation of a motor vehicle.
Both men were remanded into custody on their new charges for future court appearances.
At the time of this encounter, both men were parolees who fled from a community residential facility which resulted in the issuance of Canada Wide Warrants.

Town of Drumheller recognized for continued support to STARS

STARS Senior Municipal Relations liaison Glenda Farnden presented Drumheller council with a plaque in recognition for the municipality’s ongoing and continued support of the STARS foundation since 1989. The Town currently has committed $10,000 annually through its current council term, ending 2025.

Preparations underway for May provincial election

While it seems like the campaign has already begun, the writ for the next provincial election isn’t expected to be dropped for another two and a half months. Preparation for the coming election is already underway.
Drumheller-Stettler Returning Officer Janice Hoover, from Delia, has been appointed once again to oversee the provincial election slated by law for May 29, 2023.
“Once again we will have our main returning office in Hanna, but they also let us have a satellite returning office in Provost,” Hoover tells the Mail. “That will help serve people in the northeast area.”
This will be the first election in Alberta with a fixed election date. This has allowed the organization to get a jump start.
Hoover says the election clerks are in place and are bringing in support staff. The next step will be recruiting election day workers and workers to staff the advance poll workers. This should happen in late March and early April.
Her responsibility is, “To follow the Election Act and make sure that everyone who is eligible has the opportunity to vote,” said Hoover. “In an area as geographically large as our electoral division is, there are lots of details and plans that need to be laid and accounted for.”
There have been a few changes to the polling locations.
“Some of our voting areas are geographically larger because of the success of the advance polls. In the last election, more people took advantage of the advance polls,” she said.
Hoover said some of the polling stations were very quiet because of the advance polls. The poll locations are confirmed.
“This is earlier than usual because usually, we had to wait because we didn't know when the election is, because you had to wait for the writ to be dropped, but because this is the first time there has been a planned fixed election date, we were able to get our voting places sorted out earlier,” she said.
The Where to Vote Cards are expected to come out in the near future.
"According to the Elections Alberta timetable, we are right on track, or ahead of schedule,” said Hoover.
