IMG 6136

The Town of Drumheller and Wheatland County hosted an Open House to discuss its Intermunicipal Development Plan on Wednesday, November 6.
Municipalities are required to have Intermunicipal Development Plans in place with their neighbouring towns and counties by 2020 and the plan must address future land issues, transportation systems, coordination on intermunicipal programs, environmental matters and a dispute resolution process and a procedure to amends and administer the plan.
This plan applies to a geographical area along the borders of the two municipalities and is required to be put in place as part of the Intermunicipal  Collaboration Framework. This is also mandated by the new Municipal Government Act to provide for integrated and strategic planning, delivery and funding of intermunicipal services.
Drumheller is required to have three agreements in place with Wheatland County, Starland County, Kneehill County, and Special Areas, which all border the Town.
About a dozen were in attendance for the open house and presentation.

On Saturday, October 26th,105 people got all dressed up and put on their masquerade masks to have a fun evening and raise money for youth programming in Drumheller.

The evening included entertainment from Indigo Circus, the Darrin Lane Band and DJ Grant Daly. A silent auction of 38 items from 31 businesses helped raise $8,309.75 and a West Jet raffle raised $4,660.

“The need to support our youth was highlighted in the Needs Assessment, with 75% of the responses stating that they wished to have a space for youth programming. People can find out more about our plans for youth programming, when I present to council on November 25th,” said Alicia Smith Youth Coordinator.

“It was an amazing evening, huge congratulations to everyone involved. The funds raised at this ball, and through other fundraising efforts, are vital in supporting the Town of Drumheller in creating vibrant youth programs. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the project,” added Councillor, Kristyne DeMott, who attended the event.

The Social Needs assessment was carried out in late 2017 by Drumheller Family and Community Support Services. So far the total raised for the youth centre is $30,500.

Big Valley is heading for an election and there are five running for two vacant seats.

The Mail reported in its October 9 edition that nominations had opened for the two seats. One was vacated by former Mayor Sandra Schell who tendered her resignation. She had applied and was successful in becoming the CAO for the Village of Big Valley.

The other seat was vacated by Councillor Dwayne Grover who also resigned. Harry Nibourg is currently mayor.

In the interim the village, without the ability to form quorum, Municipal Affairs assigned an official administrator.

Running for the seats are Larry Annable, Clark German, Asaph Ken Johnson, Ron Olive-Kilpatrick and Arthur Tizzard.

The election is to be held on Thursday, November 28.

  • This story has been updated from a previous edition that ran in The Drumheller Mail which incorrectly stated that Mr. Nibourg had vacated his seat. The Mail apologizes for the error.
