Kneehill County sends Alberta Transportation letter of concern over bridge condition

Kneehill County Council

An Alberta Transportation owned bridge crossing the Bigelow Reservoir on Highway 587 northwest of the Town of Trochu is in need of repairs, and Kneehill County council is preparing a letter of concern to Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen.
Council directed administration to draft the letter and arrange a meeting with Minister Dreeshan during the spring Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) convention in March 2023 during the regular Tuesday, December 13 council meeting.
“The bridge in question was first brought to our attention (by Division 6 Councillor Wade Christie) a number of months ago,” stated Director of Infrastructure Mike Ziehr during the meeting.
He noted the bridge falls under the jurisdiction of Alberta Transportation, and the county made the department aware of these concerns. An inspection was carried out by the province in February 2022 which showed several concerns.
However, following the inspection, the county was informed Alberta Transportation is “not looking to repair (the bridge) anytime soon” and is not being included “anywhere in their future plans for budgeting;” there are some concerns the bridge could be placed under weight restriction, or suffer failure or loss of the structure if it is left unrepaired, and the impact this could have as traffic is diverted off the highway and onto county-owned gravel roads.
Deputy Reeve Ken King questioned whether it might be better to address the issue in a face-to-face meeting with Minister Dreeshen at the spring RMA convention.
Council approved sending the letter of concern to Minister Dreeshen, and to also meet with Minister Dreeshen at the spring RMA convention if the opportunity was available.

The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) was able to host their first in-person Bring and Buy since 2019. It was a huge success. A cheque for $4,700 was presented to The Salvation Army to support the Kettle Campaign. The CWL is grateful to all who attended and for their very generous donations. At the presentation are (l-r) Amanda Courtenay of The Salvation Army, Joanne Dumaine of the CWL, Major Laura Burrell of The Salvation Army, and Velma Scott of the CWL.

Temporary closure of Drumheller Emergency Department

The Emergency Department (ED) at the Drumheller Health Centre is temporarily closed due to physician unavailability.

The ED at the Drumheller Health Centre will be closed from 8 a.m. on Dec. 24, to 8 a.m. on Dec. 25.

Regular operations at the ED will resume on Dec. 25 at 8 a.m.

This closure is necessary as the service cannot operate without a physician onsite.

Patients arriving for care at the ED at the Drumheller Health Centre during this time will be redirected to other available care options as appropriate to their needs. These options include returning when the service resumes, booking an appointment with a family doctor, or calling Health Link at 811 for medical information and advice.

Patients can also access medical care for urgent health concerns from facilities in nearby communities.

Other services at the Drumheller Health Centre are not impacted by the temporary closure of the ED.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
