The Hon. Shaye Anderson, Minister of Municipal Affairs has awarded the Town of Drumheller an Innovation award.

The Ministers Awards for Municipal Excellence have been awarded since 2002, to encourage municipalities to share their successes by recognizing accomplishments in the provision of municipal services in Alberta. Each year municipalities, whether individually or in partnership with other organizations, have highlighted practices including new and unique approaches to issues, streamlined processes for existing practices, and creative community partnerships.

Awards are given in five categories: Innovation; Partnerships; Safe Communities; Smaller Municipalities; and Larger Municipalities.

The Ministers Awards Review Committee reviewed 45 submissions to the program this year. The committee recognized the Dinowalk / Dinosaur Street Naming Project as the winner of the Innovation category.

"These ideas and concepts were a product of collaboration with Urban Systems, MarketingHits, the Economic Development Advisory Committee (which includes representatives from the Drumheller Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures Big Country in addition to the Royal Tyrrell Museum and other key community members with Board Chair, Summer Manca) and Travel Drumheller." added Julia Fielding, Economic Development and Communication Officer for the Town of Drumheller.

"It is always great to be recognized by our peers from other municipalities. This is an example of a great partnership program," noted CAO Darryl Drohomerski.

The selection of the dinosaur types and medallions took place in July 2017.Secondary street names of Drumheller dinosaurs took place in September, 2017 and the final installation of Wikipedia linked medallions will be installed during the Summer of 2018.

Digital aspects of the project will be taken-over by Travel Drumheller in order to promote an interesting walking experience in the form of a virtual scavenger hunt that connects our guests to the stories about dinosaurs that once roamed Drumheller, over 67 million years ago.
