Tyrrell Education Department wins two national awards

The Royal Tyrrell Museum picked another armful of trophies, this time from Interpretation Canada for their education programs.
The Tyrrell earned a bronze medal in the Personal Interpretation category for their Junior Palaeo Investigators program and a bronze medal in the Non-Personal Interpretation category for its Passport to the Past, part of the Dinosaur Adventure Hour program.
“It is nice to be recognized for the work that the museum does,” said Earle Wiebe head of education at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, “recognized among other interpreters across Canada, it recognizes the whole process.”
The Junior Palaeo Investigators program is aimed at Grade 2 and 3 aged students and is designed for school groups. Wiebe explains students learn how palaeontologists use clues from the past to learn about ancient life.
“It is very interactive and engaging program where they are looking at evidence,” said Wiebe.
The Passport to the Past is used during the Tyrrell’s Summer public Dinosaur Adventure Hour program for kids ages 3-6 and is used to track their experiences and what they learned from the program as they go through the museum galleries.
“It is a really neat well developed booklet that was produced here by our design studio and education team,” said Wiebe. “It looks like a passport but for kids, it as lots of pictures and stickers.”
This is certainly not the first time the Tyrrell has been recognized by Interpretation Canada, In fact they have won four awards in the last two years alone. Wiebe said it is a collaborative effort.
“It is a team effort in both of these cases. The education team works closely with the design studio and our fabrication department for material for the program,” he said. “It is not just a one or two person project, it is many people putting it together, so everybody gets recognized for these projects.”

Finalists named for Business Excellence Awards

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce will be recognizing some of Drumheller’s business leaders as part of Small Business Week. The finalists for the Business Excellence Awards were announced on Wednesday.
The awards will be handed out on October 19.
The Chamber asked area residents to give them a hand by nominating business they felt were doing a great job.
Over 30 nominations were received, with some businesses receiving multiple nominations.
“On behalf of the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce, we would like to congratulate all of the nominees and we look forward to announcing the award recipients on Friday, October 19. As a Chamber of Commerce, we believe it is important to recognize businesses and individuals in the community for their efforts. Presenting the Business Excellence Awards during Small Business Week is a perfect way to celebrate business in our community,” said Heather Bitz, general manager of the Drumheller Chamber.
The Chamber Board of Directors met Wednesday morning and named the three finalists for each award category.
In the Small Business of the Year category, the finalists were Bits & Pieces Keepsake Quilting, Numberz Accounting, and Signature Bookkeeping.
For the Business of the Year, Heartwood Inn & Spa, Hi-Way 9 Express, and Western Chevrolet were named this year’s finalists.
The finalists in the Downtown Business of the Year category were Chinook Credit Union, Reality Bytes, and Sports Room Source for Sports.
The newest businesses in town are also being recognized. The Rookie of the Year finalists are Country Road RV, Dry Canyon Collectables, and Sublime Food & Wine.
Last, but not least, are the Business Professionals of the Year, recognized for their commitment to the business community and community at large. Trevor Gough, John Shoff, and Connie Tremblay are this year’s finalists.
This will be the first time in roughly six years that the business awards will be handed out in Drumheller. The Chamber of Commerce brought the awards back after the hiatus, because there were no such awards being given and they wanted to celebrate the achievements of Drumheller businesses.
