Former residents safe following Ecuador earthquake

Earthquake map

At approx 6:58 pm  (Ecuador is 1 hour ahead of Drumheller MST), a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Ecuador on Saturday night. Former Drumhellerites Paul Bertamini, Susan and Ashton Neufeld currently reside near Puerto Lopez, Ecuador and have checked in as safe on Facebook.

Originally people also fled their coastal homes due to a threat of a Tsunami, but that threat has since dissipated.

According to BBC news, there have been seven 7.0 magnitude or greater events within 250km of this latest tremor since 1900, some resulting in subsequent tsunamis

Canada Day Parade theme decided

Residents have decided on the Canada Day Parade theme in an online poll, and have decided upon “Drumheller Through the Ages.”
The poll, which closed on April 8, saw “Drumheller Through the Ages” narrowly win with 35 per cent of the vote, trailed by “Find Your Adventure” at 34 per cent and “Red and White” at 31 per cent.
“There are a lot of different ways people can work with that theme,” said Drumheller Chamber Services Coordinator Marley Henneigh.
“We have a pretty creative community that is really enthusiastic. We could see a big variety of points in time, like different decades, heritage themes or dinosaurs or maybe even some futuristic stuff.”
Canada Day events will be held again at both the World’s Largest Dinosaur and at the Badlands Community Facility, including inflatable bouncy structures, face painting, a headline performance by local country singer and former Canadian Idol contestant Jaydee Bixby, as well as food trucks.
A press release from the Chamber is expected next week which will reveal any route changes for the parade.

Calling on all volunteers to help make Drumheller a cleaner place to be on Earth Day.
Earth Day is Friday, April 22. Organizers are hoping to complete a three-hour blitz of the town picking up garbage. Everyone is welcome to come out and do their part for the community.
Organizer Heather Colberg explains they have set up meeting points throughout town where there will be garbage bags and t-shirts for volunteers. All they ask is for people to come out with their work gloves and as many volunteers they can muster.
They invite local residents, businesses, families, student and seniors to come out and pitch in. They are planning to be out and about between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and volunteers can dedicate as much time as they have available to the clean up.
Community and youth groups are also welcome.
For more information, or to volunteer contact Colberg at 403-823-0811 or email heathercolberg@icloud.com., or Tia Leone Briggs at 403-821-1635.
