St. Anthony’s track approved by board

It looks like the valley will have a track and field facility in the near future  for students and residents to train and compete.
St. Anthony’s School has received word that Christ the Redeemer School Division will be going forward with an assessment, with the goal of building a football  and soccer field with a  running track and  track and dield facilities in the coming year.
Christ the Redeemer School Division Trustee for Drumheller, Mark Chung, said the Board has budgeted for the track and will be evaluating the site in the spring to see what is needed.  The goal is to have the fields in this year.
“It is an exciting step forward for the school,” said Chung.
The track will be built on the west side of the school.
St. Anthony’s Principal JoAnne Akerboom is also excited with the development. She says the school will be meeting with the board office to look at design and features.
She is grateful for the commitment from the board to move forward with the project, especially in light of the challenges the division has faced this spring with flooding at some of the division’s schools.
“It is a significant expenditure for the board and we are very fortunate,” said Akerboom. “We will have something the students will be able to use this year.”
She sees this as a benefit, not only to St. Anthony’s School students, but to the community at large. Currently DVSS has a shale track, and often it is shared during track and field season by both schools.
The new track will allow the school to host interscholastic events and tournaments, which could benefit Drumheller.

Rosebud artist release Christmas album

One of the best parts of the Rosebud Theatre experience is now available ‘to go.’ The holiday music treasury,  A Rosebud Christmas, features the vocal and instrumental talents of Rosebud Centre of the Arts actors, students, staff and alumni and funds raised will go to support Rosebud School of the Arts.
“Live dinner music and beautiful harmonies have always filled the air at the Mercantile dining room,” says Adam Furfaro, Executive Director of RCA. “Now our patrons can finally take this special part of the Rosebud experience home with them.
“So many people have told us we should record a Christmas album, and this year, with the help of an amazing benefactor, we had the resources to bring it to fruition,” Furfaro continues. “Many people don’t know that RSA is a not-for-profit charitable organization. The net proceeds from the sale of this album will directly support the work we do here in the school and in the theatre. So buy a copy—or ten—and share this wonderful music with everyone on your list.”
Producer and recording engineer Paul Zacharias says the song selection ranges from traditional to contemporary, with arrangements that make old favourites feel new again.
“Rosebud’s greatest natural resource is talent,” he says. “These musicians gave their gifts in support of RSA—much like the Little Drummer Boy did. It’s so great to have captured these amazing performances for our Rosebud patrons and supporters to enjoy for years to come.”
Tracks on the recording include Silver Bells, sung by Rosebud’s Anne of Green Gables, Cassia Schramm; I Wonder as I Wander performed by Lewis Frere of the folk duo Lewis & Royal; Christmas Island featuring Rosebud School of the Arts students Alix Cowman (vocals, ukulele and kazoo) and Lauren de Graaf (vocals and whistling); and Baby It’s Cold Outside sung by Zacharias and his wife Heather, performing as the duo Me & the Mrs.
Copies can be purchased by calling Cindy Malmberg, Manager of Rosebud Gifts & Crafts, at 403-677-2350 or by stopping by the shop Wednesdays from 10:30 am - 4:00 pm and Thursday to Saturday from 10:30 am - 8:00 pm. Drumheller Christmas dinner continues in to 31st year

Santa Claus is coming to town on Christmas Day for his annual dinner, of course.
After delivering presents to boys and girls everywhere, his spirit has come back to Drumheller to stage the annual dinner, just as it has for the last 31 years.
The tradition has humble roots, and at its heart, the belief that no one should be alone on Christmas. It started simply as a small group of friends coming together to celebrate the holiday. Today there is an open invitation to anyone to come to Yavis Family Restaurant to enjoy turkey with all the fixin’s on Christmas Day.
This is a great chance for those who do not have family in town to come and enjoy their neighbours’ company, there are others who do not have the means to make themselves a Christmas dinner. A couple years ago, the organizers received a heartfelt letter from a truck driver, who enjoyed the company on a Christmas he spent on the road away from family.
Whole families in Drumheller now make the annual dinner a part of their Christmas tradition.
There is a dedicated core of volunteers, who, every year do their best to make all welcome. They offer a shuttle service for those who are lacking transportation, and for those who cannot make it out, volunteers are able to deliver meals to those that are bound to their homes.
Yavis Restaurant will be open from noon to 3 p.m. for the annual Santa’s Christmas dinner and they are excited to be a part of tradition that shows no sign of slowing down.  Last year they served up  more than 300 dinners.
Part of the success of the dinner is attributable to the strong contingent of volunteers who every year come out to make the dinner a reality. Whether it is in the kitchen, serving at tables or delivering dinners, everyone involved is proud to be a part of it.

To arrange a ride to the dinner or a drop-off, contact Century 21 at 403-823-2121.
