Police continue home invasion investigation

RCMP new cruiser Sept 2014

Police are still looking for clues as to the identity of a suspect who sexually assaulted a Drumheller resident in their home, in an apparent random attack.

On Sunday January 10, at about 10 p.m., a resident in a local apartment building opened his door to a male requesting to use their phone. The culprit forced their way into the home and sexually assaulted the occupant.

The Drumheller RCMP detachment, along with the Drumheller General Investigation section are investigating. A police dog unit from Wetaskiwin was brought in to attempt to pick up a track on the culprit.

RCMP issued a press release on Friday morning. Staff Sergeant Jeremie Landry of the RCMP explains they have to balance a number of issues when releasing information the public, as a warning or to ask for assistance.

"We don't want to alarm the public but public safety is paramount," he said.

Another aspect taken into consideration is the integrity of the investigation.

Police stress to the public to protect themselves by verifying the identity of strangers before opening the door of their home to them.

The culprit is described as about 5’10’’, wearing blue jeans, a green sweater and a light blue baseball cap. The person wore a black balaclava to cover their face.

If anyone has information about this crime, please call the Drumheller RCMP Detachment at (403) 823-2630.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1.800.222.8477(TIPS), by internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by SMS (check your local Crime Stoppers [www.crimestoppers.ab.ca] for instructions).  You do not have to reveal your identity to Crime Stoppers, and if you provide information to Crime Stoppers that leads to an arrest(s), the recovery of stolen property, and/or a seizure of illicit drugs, you may be eligible for a cash reward.

Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society update

DSC 4812

On December 10, 2015 the annual general meeting was held for the Drumheller Stampede and Agriculture Society.
The new President is Mike Hansen, Merle Fitzpatrick as first Vice President and Brian Telford sitting as second Vice President.  Howard McKee is still the treasurer along with Wendy Fitzpatrick as secretary.
The board is switching focus this year towards supporting or holding more agriculture events. Committees were formed to ensure this succeeds.  The ideas from horsemanship clinics to Barrel Racing competitions are possibly in the works.
The IMCA Stock Car racing is scheduled for May 21-22, June 4-5, August 13-14 and September 10-11, 2016.
There is a possibility that a Rock & Race Weekend will also happen on July 1 & 2, 2016.   The society is actively looking at partnering with The Kindersley Track to bring more of these events to the valley.  IMCA produced a racing calendar with Drumheller being the very first track pictured.
Loud as Hell is scheduled for July 28 to August 1, 2016, and the Tough Mudder event on August 6 & 7.
The Society also rents the Stampede Barn to the Badlands Hell Raisers roller derby team for practice twice per week.   There have also been dog clinics.
There are lots of dates still open to allow the society to move towards the focus of agricultural events.
The board has been repairing the structure substantially.  The roof repairs were finished last year along with some painting.   In 2016, the ceiling in the main barn and ceiling tiles in the boardroom need to be fixed. There are eventual plans to have a grandstand erected on site to facilitate ease of viewing events.
Town Councillor Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk said, “ Financially, the Ag Society is presently sitting in the black and are holding their own.”  She further stated, “We want to acknowledge all of our donors past and present which includes the Town as they have been generous in their help.”

Town responds to Newcastle water break

The Town of Drumheller is aware of, and have responded to a waterline break at 12th Street West and 2nd Ave in the Newcastle neighborhood of Drumheller.

Town crews are actively working on the situation and hope to have this break resolved as soon as possible. It’s believed the age of the waterline was a major contributing factor to the break.

If water in the area needs to be shut off, residents will be notified.
