Residents offered affordable facility use

Everyone in Drumheller should now be able to enjoy the benefits of our facilities, regardless of income or lifestyle.
On January 25 at the regular meeting, Town Council approved the application process for a program that allows eligible residents access to the following recreation facilities: Memorial Arena, Aquaplex and the Badlands Community Facility (BCF).
The application forms will be available for recreation assistance throughout the year at the Aquaplex and BCF and forms will also be available soon on the Town’s website.
This program is available to all residents of Drumheller, pending proof of residency.  Applicants must submit a qualifying document to support low income, proof of I.D. and current contact information. The Director of Community Services department will review the requests and applicants will be notified of approval.
Qualification is automatic if one of the following applies: if you are on AISH, Income Support or another Alberta Works program, Drumheller Housing Authority tenant, on Guaranteed Income Support and Protected Person Status (Refugee Status).  If you are not a recipient of any of the programs or benefits listed above, you still might qualify for recreation assistance program by providing Notice of Assessments.
Mayor Terry Yemen said, “After reviewing this program and comparing it to other communities, I believe this is going to work very well for Drumheller residents.”
Drumheller Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore said, “We want people of all backgrounds to have a healthy lifestyle.”
Councillor Jay Garbutt stated on social media, “We have been exploring our recreation/arts/culture philosophy for awhile and it’s been tough slogging. We have a much larger than average group of citizens on some kind of income support in this town and that cost is a barrier to their use of the Aquaplex and BCF. Wins are hard to find lately but this feels like a good one.”
The Town of Drumheller believes that the well-being and quality of life for its residents is important.

Mayor suggests letter campaign to Montreal Mayor

Mayor Terry Yemen is hoping the combined voices from the Alberta Urban Municipalities, Reeves, and all city Mayors will influence Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre to change his mindset on the Energy East pipeline project.
On January 27, Mayor Terry Yemen requested a form letter be prepared from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) asking that all Mayors and Reeves in Alberta sign and forward.
The letter would outline the need for national cooperation and explain the importance of the proposed Energy East pipeline project to all Canadians. The pipeline would give the oil industry access to world energy markets and give a boost to our national economy.
This letter would then be forwarded to the Mayor of Montreal Denis Coderre.
Coderre is against the Energy East pipeline project and has publicly stated, “We are against it because it still represents significant environmental threats and too few economic benefits for greater Montreal.”
Mayor Terry Yemen said, “This  idea came up in a  discussion, there was some merit to it, and it’s  not confrontational, just an expression from Alberta that we should all work cooperatively  for the betterment of Canada.”
