Rotary gives back to the community

DSCF0120

The Drumheller Rotary Club made three donations last week to well deserving community organizations.
Rotary donated cheques to Two Wheel View, the youth bicycle ride from Drumheller to Banff, the Greentree School breakfast program, and the Munson Community Hall.
“The club is pleased to support these efforts which are the result of our fundraising,” said Rotary president John Shannon. “The general public supports these projects, and in turn, the money is dedicated to worthy causes.”
The Two Wheel Views’ Badlands to Banff trip involves youth and the RCMP in this life enhancement opportunity that’s partnered with the Duke of Edinburgh youth awards, receiving $500 from Rotary.
Greentree School’s breakfast program manager Doreen Oliver told the meeting that the breakfast program is very important as about 100 students participate. She says fundraising to keep the program going is a constant challenge, but got a big boost with a $1,000 donation.
Becky Kowalchuk informed the club that Munson is close to opening the doors of its new community hall for events, and the $500 donation from Rotary was much appreciated to help fund the new facility.

Music you can touch

 MG 1178

On Sunday, July 24, the hamlet of Rosebud will again welcome some of Canada’s finest chamber musicians for the festival’s fourth year.

This grassroots project brings world class music performances to rural communities in the Canadian Badlands.

The communities of Rosebud, Drumheller and Three Hills will once again be inspired by the exquisite music of the masters (including Haydn, Schubert, Mozart).  This year, the centre piece in the programming will be Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Opus 111, which was intended to be his farewell to music.

Along with the four returning favourites, Keith, Arnold, Sheila, and Peter will be joined by Marie Bérard, concertmaster of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and Belgian violist, Florian Peelman.

In addition to concerts in Rosebud, Drumheller and Three Hills, this year’s events will include a Reading Party in Rosebud which is an opportunity to meet the performers and experience the joy of chamber music outside the concert hall. They’re also including a Tuesday night event with Ben Plotnick and Kaitlyn Raitz at the Thorny Rose Cafe in Rosebud. They will share their unique collection of Folk, Bluegrass, Appalachian and original music.

The events calendar: Reading Party - a night of fun, unrehearsed music at the Rosebud Mercantile, Monday, July 25 at 8 pm, Fiddling and More with Kaitlyn Raitz and Ben Plotnick on Tuesday, July 26 at 8 pm.

Outdoor concert at Drumheller Passion Play Forum on Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 pm. (Alternate venue  is Knox United Church), a concert at Three Hills Arts Academy on July 29 at 7:30 pm, and a concert at Rosebud Church on July 31 at 7:30 pm.
