Hi-Way 9 Raptors making progress

Raptors

The Hi-Way 9 Peewee Raptors are making progress as they battle their way through the tiering round of the season.
After six games they have won two, and while some of their losses have been blowouts, other have been close. The one thing that ties them together is that the Raptors show promise on their offense, averaging almost five goals a game. These kinds of results are common in the early days of the season.
“They are just trying to place teams and we’ll figure out which tier we land in after this weekend,” said Coach Kadena Pierce.
Last Saturday, October 29 the team faced off against the 3Cs, a combination team of players from Consort, Coronation and Castor. Jesse Paarup was hot with two goals and three assists for five points, Kynan Perry had three goals and Chad Christensen had a single goal. Brennan Phillips and Jaxon Leavitt each had two assists and Rowan McCluskey had an assist. Despite this, they fell 9-6.
The next day they were on the road to play Indus and lost a close 6-4 battle. This time Perry had three goals, Paarup had one goal and two assists, Connor Prieston had three assists and Zachary Hern had one assist.
Coach Pierce says the team has a great attitude and is learning to gel.
“This team I have this year, a lot of them haven’t played with each other, so we are trying to develop a dynamic with them,” said Pierce. “We have a lot of work to do and a lot of strategy to work on.”
This season she only has three second-year players.
“They are a very young team, but have been doing very well, they are enjoying the season so far and I hope they can continue on with that. We have been working on a lot of sportsmanship and not paying attention to the score and working your hardest, and looking at the whole game. That has been very good for them,” she said.
This weekend the team is on home ice Saturday versus Stettler, game time is at 11:15. On Sunday, they are in Rockyford at 3:30 p.m.

New in blue

The last two months Drumheller has had a new man in blue in town. Constable Marcel Hiemstra arrived at the Drumheller RCMP detachment the end of August straight out of training.
Constable Hiemstra, who was born and raised in the Lethbridge area, said, “Drumheller is different. It’s beautiful in its own way with its historical aspect. I find you tend to get to know people more here than in a bigger place.”
Constable Hiemstra said that after 25 years he had a hard time adjusting to six months of school. He is glad to be out of training and said the detachment is helping and he is learning lots from his official trainer, Constable John Foran. Constable Hiemstra said that he is excited to consider Drumheller his home and his co workers are quickly becoming like his family.
“The RCMP is family. You have to rely on everyone. In training at depot you learn this. Without the help and moral support of the others I wouldn’t have made it through training.” he said.
Constable Hiemstra said he always wanted to either be in the army or a police officer. After being a journeyman carpenter for 16 years, Constable Heimstra, decided to follow that dream and look into joining the RCMP.
When asked what attracted him most to being with the RCMP, he said it was to be able to help people. He said, “My favorite part of the job is all the little things. I like helping people and interacting with the youth of the community.”
“Maybe one person out of 20 is grateful at the time when you show up but even if just one person is grateful, that makes my job worth it. As they say, when you are RCMP you encounter 10 per cent of the population and 90 per cent of the time it’s the worst day of their life.” Constable Hiemstra said.

November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta and the Big Country Anti-Violence Association (BCAVA) and volunteers marked the occasion with the annual Red Rose Campaign. On Tuesday afternoon, they hit the street delivering roses to businesses in the area to raise awareness of domestic violence. Once again, the campaign was supported by sponsors Home-Town Realty, which provided a donation to purchase the flowers from Freson Bros.
