Alberta Party leadership candidates coming to valley

AB Party Leadership Meet and Greet

Politics in Alberta continues to get even more interesting as high profile candidates are lining up for the leadership of the Alberta Party, and Drumheller residents will have a chance to meet them.
In a surprise move, last November Alberta Party leader Greg Clark stepped down, prompting a leadership race.
Stepping in to fill the void are former Edmonton Mayor and MLA Stephen Mandel, sitting MLA Rick Fraser and Calgary lawyer Kara Levis. They will be in Drumheller on Friday, February 16 to meet area residents.
President of the newly formed Drumheller-Stettler Alberta Party Constituency Association, Dan Moe, is looking forward to the event.
“As soon as the leadership race was on the go, we have been pushing, trying to make sure we could get the leaders to come out here to generate a little interest and show them there is a little support out here,” said Moe, adding their attendance is a small coup as the leaders have been gravitating towards the larger centres.
Moe feels they have some good candidates, and it has generated some interest in an alternative choice, in a polarized political climate.
“Right now people think there are only two choices, so we are trying to get the word out and try to position ourselves as a middle of the road option,” said Moe.
“Hopefully we want to set the party forward to look like a viable option for the next election,” said Moe.
The meet and greet is on Friday, February 16 at 7 p.m. at O’Shea’s Restaurant.

Town council busy with budget deliberations

20171120 Council Week 47 Curling TJH 0021

Drumheller Town Councillors had their noses to the grindstone, hammering out the 2018 tax supported Operational Budget.
This comes after a second marathon budget meeting on Wednesday, January 31. Mayor Heather Colberg says that council has reviewed the draft budget, but there will still be a few more tweaks before it is brought back to pass. At their next budget meeting, they are going to also begin their review of the Capital Budget.
“At our February 21 meeting we are hoping to finish it all,” said Colberg. “There are some questions we are waiting on for the operational budget. It has been a marathon. I figure we have another four-hour session coming.”
The budget meetings are open to the public and have also been streamed on the Town’s Youtube channel. She says when the budget is complete, they will be taking it to the public before passing the document.
At this point, she cannot project the tax implications of the operational budget as it is still a working document.
“We are trying to get it as balanced as we can,” she said, adding so far, she does not anticipate new major expenditures.
“There is nothing wild or crazy, we just want to keep it as tight as we can,” she said. “There is not a lot of room and you don’t want to go and make any increases either.”

Today, Wednesday, February 7, is Winter Walk Day and Drumheller residents are tying up their sneakers and hitting the paths in Drumheller for fun and fitness. The event encourages people across the province to be active outdoors in the wintertime. Greentree School and St. Anthony’s School students were enroute this morning, as well as area seniors who participated on the running track at the Badlands Community Facility with Drumheller Dragons, above. At 12:15 p.m. residents gathered at the BCF for a brisk winter hike.
