Milly the mule churns treat for Pioneer Acres’ 50th

IMG 3399

It will be a weekend of excitement and fun as the Pioneer Acres celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The Museum, celebrating the farming life, has grown leaps and bounds in its 50-year history. Lyle Rowe’s father was one who helped get the attraction on its feet five decades ago.

“He was one of the original guys, they started at Langdon Corner, at Highway 9 and Highway 1, and they outgrew it. You need washrooms and infrastructure to host people, so they made a deal with Rockyview County and moved one kilometre away from the Town of Irricana,” explains Rowe. “It has been awesome for Beiseker and Irricana.”

Pioneer Acres puts on an annual show, but this will be bigger and better as they mark 50 years on August 9-11. He explains that every year they feature a type of equipment, and this year they are going right back to the original pioneers and celebrating horsedrawn machinery.

“There is going to be 70 draft horses there,” said Rowe.

These will be working in teams demonstrating equipment, with up to a full 18-horse hitch.

“It’s spectacular to watch those horses as they all work together,” said Rowe.

He explains that every year they seed the fields on the 50-acre park in the fall, and when it comes to their annual show it is ready to be harvested. This will all be done by the power of draft horses, with the exception of the threshing which will be done by steam-driven equipment.

This year will have a horsepower demonstration by Milly the Mule. Each day she will be powering an ice cream maker, mixing a fresh batch for patrons to enjoy.

The Millarville Musical Ride will be there performing two shows on Saturday and two on Sunday.

There is a parade every day over the weekend starting at noon and many dignitaries will be in attendance including MLA Nathan Cooper and MP Martin Shields. There may even be some Stampede royalty at the event.

It takes 200 volunteers to put on the annual show, and they are hoping to host 7,500 visitors this coming weekend.

Rowe says nostalgia is a part of the attraction and success of the museum.

“There is some sentimentality, learning what our great grandparents did to come to Western Canada. First, they had to survive, and then prevail and then make a living,” he said.

Province reviews flood funding announcements

IMG 0879

The Town is hopeful its long awaited flood mitigation project will go ahead.

This comes after it was reported last week the new UCP government is reviewing projects funded by the previous government, especially those promised in the advent of the provincial election last spring.

In March the Town received word it was successful in securing $22 million from the federal government for its Flood Mitigation and Climate Change Adaptation System, from The Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. The Town also noted it has secured $28 million from the provincial government through its Community Resilience Program.

According to a Statement from Alberta Environment and Parks, “No funding decisions have been made regarding the Alberta Community Resiliency Program and the grants associated with this program. Municipalities and First Nations are still invited to apply to secure provincial and federal funding to complete these projects.”

Further it states, “Alberta’s new government made a clear commitment during the provincial election to review all of the spending commitments made by the previous administration during the legal campaign period, which began on February 1, 2019. This includes the ACRP grants announced just days prior to a general election call. As per our promise to Albertans, Government has convened the MacKinnon Panel on Alberta’s Finances to review all provincial spending. We will have more to say after the Panel finishes its important work.”

Drumheller Mayor Heather Colberg states ”We respect that the provincial government is doing their due diligence and we look forward to working with them. Currently, we have been in close contact with Nate Horner, our MLA, who knows how important flood mitigation is to our community.”

Downtown is currently being prepped by the crews behind 'Ghostbusters 2020,' which will be filming in Drumheller this week.

The film, known officially under the fake title ‘Rust City’ and only confirmed by town officials as ‘GB20,’ is the upcoming fourth film in the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise. The film is set to star the likes of Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Paul Rudd and is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the first two Ghostbusters films.

While Sony has been tight-lipped about the film, Dan Akroyd was spotted with the film’s crews in Crossfield earlier this week (pictured here with the Calgary Ghostbusters), so the original cast of Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver may be making appearances. The film entered production in July of this year and has been filming portions at different locations in Crossfield, Beiseker, and Calgary.

Crews are working in downtown Drumheller this week along 3rd Avenue to remove and replace signage to appear in the movie. The town was not able to provide additional information of how long and where shooting will take place in Drumheller.

The film is scheduled for a July release next year.
